Please Read: CDFreaks Distributed Computing Teams

We have great teams here at CDFreaks that need your help supporting research into curing diseases like Cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer and many other critical diseases so please take a moment to read this announcement.

What is Distributed Computing?
DC is a scheme of multiple computers processing problems simultaneously over a network or internet. The goal is to solve problems using thousands to millions of computers around the world to achieve a boost in performance and solve more researches faster.

What are DC projects?
There have been many research projects running for many years where they still need our help. We can help them by using our extra processing/CPU power to help cure life threatening diseases like AIDS, Cancer, Alzheimer, Anthrax and many more.

How can we help?
Throughout the day, there is time when our CPU power is not fully used, eq when browsing the internet, checking e-mails, word processing, or when you leave your PC on for 24/7 and you are away, at work or sleep. During these times we can help these research projects by donating our CPU running their small program client in our PC and in turn will benefit humanity. The client program will run in your PC solving equations and simulating problems, and when it's done it will send the results back to the main server. The researchers will compile these results for their projects and you will get “points” in return.

These are some research projects from non-profit organizations that we currently support:

Folding at Home (Stanford University)
FAH goal is to understand protein folding, misfolding and related diseases. Proteins are biology’s workhorses and before they can carry out important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery. Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

World Community Grids
WCG mission is to create the largest public computing grid benefiting humanity. They are looking for research projects that can benefit from grid technology and have a positive impact on humanity. Their success depends on individuals, like you, collectively contributing your extra computer time to the non profit endeavour. Their works include researches on Muscular Dystrophy, Cancer, Human Proteome, AIDS and many others.

The client program can be set to idle or low priority so it will halt itself when you run a big application or start a game. You can also set your client to use only a percentage of your CPU power. A small disadvantage you might have from running these clients will be a slightly higher electricity cost but it depends on your system specifications and client settings.

You can find more information about our teams, guides and FAQs in the Distributed Computing forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=135)

Thanks for your time and we hope you have fun while helping to save other people's lives.

The rules of this forum (& some tips and guidelines)

In order to make this forum an enjoyable place for everyone there are some things that might help us all to achieve this. There are several rules that must be taken into consideration and we like to give you a few tips to help you find the answer to your question quicker. The rules: We do not allow, nor condone any messages containing:
  • Language that is obscene, vulgar, sexually orientated, hateful, threatening or violate any laws;
  • Requesting for or posting of serial numbers, direct links to cracks or any other information that violates copyright laws or any other laws protecting intellectual property;
  • Requests for downloads of anything that is not freeware, shareware, trial versions or copyright-free material (hence, no ISOs, Warez or MP3s that are protected by copyright). Any references to such activities will also lead to deletion of the topic;
  • Offerings of products (tangible or intangible) and services that you do not have legal disposition over.
We do not allow:
  • Spam (Spam is unsolicited e-mail (or news postings and Private Messages) pushing a point);
  • Referral Programmes or Pyramid Schemes (links to websites through which you have a personal gain);
  • Cross posting (posting the same message in more than one forum (one posting per language is permitted in certain circumstances));
  • Rude and disrespectful behaviour, whether it is to fellow members of this forum or the staff of this forum.
If you want to advertise your products or services, you can contact DoMiN8ToR or MP|3 for prices of banners and other sponsorship options, please do not use our forum to advertise this, this is considered spam and is not allowed. The tips:
  • There is a search function available for you to search our forum. By searching this forum you can perhaps find the answer to your question sooner and you save others the time and energy to answer the question all over again (not mention save them the aggravation);
  • Next to the search function on this forum, there is a huge archive of news items and in-depth articles on various subjects to be found at our main page (www.cdfreaks.com). There is a search function available there as well;
  • If you want to leave someone a Private Message not intended for anyone else, you can use the Private Messaging that is available on our forum. Private Messaging can also be used to contact the administrators in case you feel you have been done injustice (do not contact the administrators for questions that are better left on the forum, so others can answer them and/or benefit from the answers as well);
  • When you receive no answer to your question it may be possible that no one has the answer. Instead of posting the question again you can reply in your own message and the topic will again appear on top of the topics listing
  • If you notice a user breaking the rules, please do not bash the user. Please contact the responsible moderator(s) of that forum or an online administrator through Private Messaging or use the 'Report Bad Post' function (click the orange exclamation mark in the bottom left corner of the particular post, just below the user's details) and have him close or delete the thread, this will prevent an unnecessarily negative atmosphere (and the mods won't get the feeling that someone else is doing their job ).
Several questions are asked frequently and the answers are always the same. A list of frequently asked questions regarding this forum can be found here http://club.cdfreaks.com/faq.php?:
  • What user levels are there and what do they mean? When you have posted a certain amount of posts your user status will automatically change. You will get no extras on this forum when you attain a new user status, it is in name only. However, a user status may indicate how involved you are. However, please be aware that, as the user titles are only linked to the number of posts, the user status gives little indication of the user's technical merits (people with a few posts may still be a technical expert, whereas people with many posts may simply be chatters in the Living Room forum). The more you have posted and participated in discussions on this forum, the more we expect of you to abide by the rules and guidelines of this forum. You can not edit your own user status, this option has been disabled. Certain users have been granted custom user titles on the basis of their contribution to CD Freaks (not by request).

  • When can I become a moderator or an administrator? Becoming a moderator for a specific forum is usually rewarded to users who are particularly helpful and knowledgeable in the subject of the forum they are moderating. When the administrators need a new moderator they will contact the person of whom they feel would make a good moderator. You can not apply for this 'job'. Even more so applies to the 'job' of (senior) administrator. Certain members who have shown to be helpful to the forum and know how things work may be asked to join the administrative team. Again, you cannot apply for this, if the management needs a new administrator they will contact the person of whom they feel is up for the task.
To make this forum enjoyable for all of us there are some things you should consider:
  • The use of images through the [img] tags should not be excessively used, not everyone has a high speed connection. Excessive use of images will result in long loading times which can be very annoying for modem users in particular. Instead of using the [img ] tags you can also link to an image using the [url ] tags, especially when you have several images or when the image(s) used are very big in size.
  • Quoting other people's post(s) can be very convenient to reply to certain things said. Instead of using the entire post to be quoted, restrict yourself to that sentence or (part of) sentences that you want to reply to and reply outside the [quote ] tags. This way it is clear for everybody to what in particular you are replying and again saves unnecessary loading time;
  • The use of caps (upper case typing) is considered shouting and very impolite, so please beware of this and make sure caps lock is disabled when typing your post;
  • With smilies you can express emotions (http://club.cdfreaks.com/misc.php?action=showsmilies). This can help prevent people from misinterpreting your message (especially when irony/sarcasm is involved)
The administrative staff (moderators and administrators) reserves the right to edit, close, move or delete threads, edit signatures and remove avatars, when necessary. In case of repeatedly violating forum rules a member may be deleted or even banned from this forum. When you disagree with any decision taken by a member of the administrative team you can contact the administrator in question through Private Messaging or email to ask for an explanation. Do not start a new thread when you want to enquire about the reason for an action taken by the administrative staff, but contact the responsible forum moderator(s). CD Freaks has become a real community over the last few years. The administrators (including the moderators) spend a lot of spare time in maintaining this forum and don't get paid for this. We are trying to keep things running smooth and make this an enjoyable place on the internet for everyone. Respect is something you have to earn, so please respect our rules and we will respect your opinions. Thank you for being a member and we hope you enjoy your stay, may you find great use in our forum. Visit us on IRCNet at #cdfreaks-int as well, here you can chat live with many of our members and any question you may have. You can learn more about our chat through here or go to www.ircnet.info and click webchat, enter your nick and #cdfreaks-int as the channel. You can also read more here. CD Freaks
These rules are subject to change without prior notice.

  • Please read these helpful tips and links for all (newbies and oldtimers)
  • Please describe your problem as clear as possible in your topic title, so that others can see what it is about and are more inclined to help if it is something they know something about;
  • I do not provide technical support over E-mail or Private Message (emails with such requests will be bounced);
  • Please post your questions as clear as possible, so others can help you get a correct answer sooner;
  • Please use our search, you might get an answer to your question sooner that way;

Posting guidelines of the Optical Drive forums - please read this before posting!

Hello, and welcome to the CD Freaks Optical Drive forums!

We hope that you will find these forums to be helpful and informative. To help make these forums better for everyone, we ask that you please follow these guidelines:

  1. Please do read the CD Freaks general forum rules.

  2. Please do look around to see if the question, problem, or topic that you wish to post about has already been addressed.
    • If you have a question about a DVD-Writer, please read the F.A.Q. for PC DVD-Writers first.
    • If you have a problem with a DVD-Writer, please read this troubleshooting guide first. (Although it is a NEC troubleshooting guide, the troubleshooting procedures outlined in this guide are applicable for all DVD-writers.)
    • Please read the stickied threads at the top of the forums.
    • Please search the forums to see if your question has already been answered.

  3. Please do write informative thread titles when starting new threads. Titles like "help me" are not very informative, whereas titles like "my ABC-1234 drive has difficulty burning XYZ media" are more informative, and will generally elicit a faster response from people.

  4. Please do provide as much information as possible when posting about a problem. This will allow forum members to track down your problem much more quickly.
    • If you have problems with burning DVDs, please provide the exact media code.
    • If you have problems with burning DVDs and your drive supports disc quality scanning, please attach a scan to your post. (instructions)
    • It is often helpful to provide a Nero InfoTool report. (Nero InfoTool can be downloaded separately as freeware if you do not have Nero.) (Click the diskette button at the top of InfoTool to save the report to a text file, and then copy-and-paste the report into your post, enclosed within [CODE][/code] tags.)

  5. Please do not private-message (PM) any of the forum moderators to ask for help. If you need help, post it in the forum. That way, if someone else has the same question or problem, they could see your question as well as any responses to your question that have been posted. You should PM the moderators only for private matters that are not suitable for the forum or for administrative matters (e.g., asking for a post to be moved).

  6. Please do post on-topic. Do not be offended if your thread or post gets moved to another forum; it is only because we want all the information to be easily found by visitors.
    • General optical drive posts that are not specific to a particular manufacturer should go in the general Optical Drives Forum and not one of its manufacturer-specific sub-forums. For example, posts comparing a NEC to a BenQ should go into the general forum and not in the NEC or BenQ forums because it deals with more than one drive type and is thus not specific to either NEC or BenQ.
    • Software problems and questions should go in one of the Software-Related Forums, and posts about media testing/identification software (such as Nero CD-DVD Speed) should go into the Media Testing/Identifying Software Forum.
    • Posts about recordable media should go in the Media Forum.
    • Posts about set-top video recorders should go in the Stand Alone Devices & Home Entertainment Forum.

  7. Please do take responsibility for what you do. If you "mod" (unofficially modify) your optical drive (e.g., loading an unofficial region-free firmware), you are technically voiding your warranty, because while such things may be fun and might improve performance, they are not sanctioned by the manufacturer. If you damaged your drive by "modding" it, you should accept the consequences and do not send the drive in for a replacement, as that is unfair to the manufacturer and raises the costs for the rest of us.

Thank you, and we hope that you will enjoy your visit to the CD Freaks Optical Drive forums!
