The second is the 'Data Disc' test you asked for. The disc is a Sony-R 8x(Sony08D1). It got up to 15.69 at it's peak before it started that jumping up & down in the last .35G of the burn. Time to complete test burn was 6:06

So it did not quite make 16x.
I think a lot has to do with the disc too. I tried it on a prodiscS03(4x -R) first and it only got 4x speed. I might make it to 16x if I used a MCC 004 16x disc, but I hate wasting my good discs.
Thanks michaelc,
Again just to be clear: Did you burn these using a USB or Firewire interface.
Could we see a USB & Firewire Burst test only?

Re: 16X on External Enclosure!

I'm moving this thread to the general Recording Hardware forum because this discussion about external enclosures can be helpful to owners of any optical drives, not just BenQ ones.

Re: 16X on External Enclosure!

dishinit,
The burn is using USB. My unit does not have firewire. The burst rate is 13MB/S when hooked up to my laptop and 19MB/S when hooked up to my PC. My internal Benq with f/w B7P9 gets 24MB/S and my internal NEC2500a gets 26MB/S.

michaelc,
My hat is off to you! I have never been able to get more than 12X when using B7P9 and USB, and my burst rates were 19MB/s for USB on my laptop.
Now with the 47L9 firmware I get 21-22MB/s on USB and 24MB/s on Firewire.
With 21-22MB/s burst, I am probably just under the 16X writing capability. Hmm.....Perhaps I should try another 16X USB burn.....I too, hate to waste discs.

michaelc,
Just as I thought, got to 15X+ and fell down. This same media burns at 16X, no problem, over firewire.
I don't know how you did it????
Here are my scans;

I have all of the hardware - Plumax-Prolific and Benq 1620 - and am ready to flash away. I downloaded the 47L9 EW162I firmware from the European site because the link is broken on the US site.

When I run the 47L9.exe it tells me that the Drive isn't supported:

BENQ DVD DD DW1620 B7C9
==> New F/W Version : 47L9
Drive not supported!

Any ideas?

Yes, You need to download "47L9.cvt" from the unofficial BenQ site (look for thread at top of BenQ forum) & the WinDWflash program.
You are going to cross flash your drive to a EW1621. If your drive is in the Plumax case, make sure you are connected via USB for flash.
Make sure there is no media in drive, that you have anitvirus & firewall turned off or better still, flash in safe mode.
Run the WinDWflash program, load the 47L9.cvt file and flash your drive. Reboot drive & or computer and check your firmware id via CD Speed, DVDInfo Pro or Nero System Tool.
Let us know how it goes.
