as you migth know i can write dvds only at 4x max and the burner is 16x,
...to bad...because i don't have the patience...i want to take it out and
put the writer in my desktop, if i'll ever want to write dvds from my laptop i won't - i think i'll copy the stuff from laptop on my desktop then write it....

The problem is - i dont't know how to open it and put the dvd drive in my computer, i dont't have the original box anymore (i think there were some instructions how to do this) - so : BIG MISTAKE !!!

can anyone please help me!?
The Plumax Case is two pieces held together by the side panels. You have to snap off both the left & right side panels and the case will open like a clam shell. The best way is with a butter knife. Lift up the side panels at the rear of the case where it wraps around and they should start to sepreate.

Good Luck...

Re: 1213 external enclosure issues looks like the days of externals..

Did anyone ever figure out the Oxford911 issue?

I have a Constar SNT Combo. What troubles me is if I put a HD in, I can get about 35Mb/s for firewire 1394 and 28Mb/s for USB 2.0.

If I put my NEC3500 in the *same* enclosure, I can only get about 12Mb/s (10x) for firewire and 16Mb/s (12x and yes my USB is faster in this case). When I use Nero DVD Speed, I get a graph that starts at 6x which maxes out at 10x (1394) or 12x (usb), even though my NEC is 16x.

I have already flashed to firmware 3.8 and enabled a couple tweaks like detect non-standard signature, etc etc. Just a note to everyone, you absolutely have to flash to 3.8 before blaming your enclosure with Oxford911. My enclosure totally sux, even with HD, until I flashed it. It was intermittently not recognizing my HD (both 1394 or USB) & having delayed write failures, etc.

So it seems to be some incorrect/incompatible setting between the enclosure & the burner causing it to run at DMA2 (16Mb/s max) instead of the NEC spec UDMA2 (33Mb/s max)

Your will find the same information over in the NEC forum. The two 911 case I was having problems with were the Belkin & ADS units. Both companies I feel know about the problem but will not admit it. We have had a half-dozen people working on this issue with no success. The latest firmware and the use of the latest uploader. Nothing works. I can tell you the Prolific 3507 solution works with the latest firmware...

Good Luck...

Thanks for the quick response. I'll post a solution if I every find one.

I can live with 8x burns so it's not the end of the world.

I tested my firewire/usb enclosure on a harddrive:
1. USB 2.0 - 20 MBytes/s average throughput
2. Firewire - 30 Mbytes/s average throughput

this is using sisoft sandra test.

Prolific Combo ChipSet: TransferRate = 22MB (IEEE), 12MB (USB)
Oxford 911 & Cypress ChipSet: TransferRate = 12MB (IEEE), 7MB (USB)
InSystem ChipSet: TransferRate = 12MB (USB) with 812S@832S (VS08)
InSystem ChipSet: TransferRate = 10MB (USB) with 800A@822U (7.GS)
NEC ShipSet: TransferRate = 12MB (USB)

Testing in OnGoing...

hmm i have a ads (new oxford) dual enclosure and this drive using firewire and can get 16x burns. for some reason sounds like it must be using dmadouble mode instead of udma for your 3500 drive.

Jamos,
Well I know you are right, but how do you set UDMA mode in WinXP SP2 with an external case? I don't of anyway to do that. If I use a Prolific it does use UMDA2 !!!!

you cant really, and you do not really even know if it is using multiword dma2 or udma2 until you try to burn. I can get 16x burns with my FX53 but the same drive enclosure on my p4 3.2 laptop will not burn faster than 8x. I do have some prolific (older) usb2 enclosures but have not used them for dvd writing.
