Windows Vista HD-DVD, Blu-Ray Support Question

I'm a little confused to why MS is saying there won't be support for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray just yet. Surely if you install a drive of one of these formats, its up to drive to work with the OS and the drive do the work. What difference does it make if the OS supports them or not? Or are they talking offically?
