Will DVD Out Live Blu-Ray and HDDVD?

With neither Blu-Ray or HDDVD taking off the big question is will the regular DVD out live them both?

I've seen both and honestly can't really see the difference between BR/HDDVD and a regular DVD! Until movies are filmed in HD then a better DVD is useless. Movies are still filmed on what is still an analogue format and with a higher resolution dvd you get more artifacts from the lower quality film.

Thus, I feel the regular dvd will be the dominant format for the forseeable future!

Re: Will DVD Out Live Blu-Ray and HDDVD?

Your statement is only partially correct, Blu-Ray and HD format will be short lived due to the fact that the next generation technology is already in the pipe, and it's quite a change from what Blu-Ray and HD have to ofter. The only frustrating thing for the consumer at this point and time is that we are going to see the movie company's try and force the choice to the consumer by only exclusively offering a specific movie in one format only. This could really bite them in the ass.

This is all dependent on various conditions.

What kind of T.V. ?
Was it a standard dvd player which only does 480i?
Was it a upconverting dvd player which does 1080p?
What kind of connections?

I think you get the point.

The film stock used for most movie production has a much higher potential resolution than even HD disc formats can support. Analogue does not mean it is worse than some low resolution digital formats

I think this needs addressed before one can say you can't see a difference or hear a difference.

I personally have no ideal but I am hoping for HD-DVD to win as it is much cleaner and crisper too.

Re: Will DVD Out Live Blu-Ray and HDDVD?

TL0 is correct -- 35mm film resolves considerably more color and definition than we can currently scan with telecines that are used to transfer film to digital format. If you are saying that HD-DVD and BluRay are better if the material is shot with a video camera in HDformat, you are wrong. Certainly one issue is that a lot of HD content is upconverted from standard definition video tapes instead of being remastered from the film in HD format.
