Ouch sorry to hear that you are sarcastically that far behind. Yea we see plenty of movies being advertised but no BD players. I think Christmas will be when the full push and shove partake.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

At the moment, both seem to be losing out to "conventional" DVD, and could also be in danger from any other contender that arises - perhaps a new compression format could boost the usable video capacity of DVD, while using the same processing plants.

Blu-Ray is much stronger in PC drives and has a PS3 foothold - the only console to actually include a hi-definition drive as standard.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

I honestly hope they both die... other formats (EVD, HVD, FVD) have proven that high def is possible on a red laser based drive and that way wont require us to re-purchase all our movies

For file storage I want HD-DVD but its mainly an anti-Sony thing

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

As of now, it looks like blu-ray is winning. But I really hope HD-dvd wins namely just because of Sony's past business practices of always trying to push there proprietary formats at a higher prices. Back when I got my sony digital camera, I watched the adds for weeks on a good deal for a memory stick, but they were always 10-15 bucks more than all the other formats.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

We thought the end of HD-DVD was decided, then *BANG* 2 big studios dropped/ditched BD completely so they say and force HD-DVD only.

Conclusion?

Wait til Samsung have their MULTI HD player (BD / HD DVD for real this time) released just to learn 1 month later that the BD revision were updated to level 1.1.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

Neither will win.

The "Them and us" argument is just splitting everyone and forcing people to choose, which most people hate doing as it means loosing out on something. If they had settled their differences at the beginning and come out with one common format then we would not have this mess and I would have expected HD video to be fully with us now and players costing less than £80. Of course the new discs would be alot more expensive than a DVD, not because they cost more to make though.

Personally I am just sitting back and waiting for one or other format to totally kill off the other. The only way I will jump one way or the other before then is if a killer piece of equipment comes out that is a "must have" (and no, the PS3 is not a must have, its got flashy graphics but lacks in all other departments especially price).

Personally I am voting the same as most other people and just buying DVD's.

People compairing the BR / HDDVD format war to the DVD-R / DVD+R format war are wrong, the difference is that the DVD format war discs would all play on a simple DVD player, you can't play a BR disc on a HDDVD player and vice verser whereas you can play a DVD-R on a DVD+R machine, you just cant record.

Oh, I also refuse to buy yet another version of StarWars, I have 4 versions already.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

I don't care which wins, just that one does! Think of the DVD now. You can get a portable DVD player for $80 these days. Imagine down the road if you want a portable DVD player. Blu-ray or HD DVD? Two formats will prevent HD disks from ever being widely accepted as the current DVDs are. Also renting a HD disk will be complicated. Currently I think you can only rent Blu-Ray.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

I agree that neither will win, if win means eliminating the other format in the next couple of years. I think HD-DVD has played their cards right recently with studios switching, lower priced players to make sure they survive for a while.
In terms of sales, I think BD may have a slight edge in the short term, and in the long term it's hard to predict.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

i thought i read on betanews a while ago that china their own hddvds, not sure if these will work in regular hddvd players or not...but thats a huge market and the players will probably be pretty cheap...so if their players can play regular hddvds and the chinese hddvds then that could be trouble for bluray lol

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

If everyone keeps waiting for the winner, I think the consumer will be better off, they will both lower prices to where the avgerage "Joe" can afford to try these drives and media. I think the winner in the end will be the consumer, but don't act too soon.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

For now Blu-Ray is finally going to have an ethernet port on its players. HD-DVD players have had one all along. This allows the user to be able to fully interact with the disc and utilize all of the aspects of the menu. Also, Blu-Ray needs constant firmware updates to play new movies, which means most home users will not be able to figure this operation out. Also, updates are easier with an ethernet port, allowing connection to a PC, rather than burning the update to a disc and then flashing the player. It is not consumer friendly to have to update the stand alone player as often as DVD Decrypter just to play the movie you buy or rent.

Why?
I'd say BD is the winner because a new format can only win if there are USEFUL recording options with it..........and HD-DVD is just bad with that...

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

According to Forrester Research who published an article on September 21st 2007, the format war will remain for at least 18 more months.

Quote:
Forrester predicted in 2005 that Blu-ray would eventually win a hard-fought victory over HD-DVD in the next-generation DVD format war. Today, Forrester believes that Blu-ray remains in a better position than HD-DVD — but that Blu-ray strategists need to alter course. Blu-ray's failure to land a knock-out blow means that the format war will continue for at least 18 more months. Blu-ray's content advantages are somewhat diminished since the recent decision by Paramount to commit exclusively to HD-DVD. And HD-DVD hardware prices have dropped directly into consumers' preferred price range, according to Forrester's Technographics® survey data. Weakened by these developments, Blu-ray needs to offer a viable hardware model at the $250 price point by Christmas 2007. The Blu-ray camp must also stave off further studio defections, and employ more aggressive promotional tactics to counter HD-DVD's recent momentum. Failure to alter strategy would open up Blu-ray to a possible upset defeat at the hands of HD-DVD.

Re: Who do you think will win: Blu-ray or HD-DVD

Too bad they won't play nice in the sandbox together. This just makes the consumer (or me at least) want to buy a dual format player and not worry about who wins or loses as long as I can watch the movies I want and not what the Blu-ray or HD-DVD war dictates.

With current prices on HD-DVD players, who wins the war doesn't really matter. Besides, you can always watch your discs on whatever format player you choose. It's not like they will someday take it away from you.
