When the hell will HD DVD players be available in Europe?

I think that we in Europe should have got and HD-DVD Players ages ago. Because HD ready TVs have been here since last year and maybe longer and the only way for us to experience High Definition is with the Xbox 360 game console. Why is there such a delay in HD players in Europe?

Ask hell, lol.

Really, check some reviews and you will get the idea why this has saved you from flushing some bucks down the toilet...

I agree. Unless you want to deal with early generation problems and high prices it pays to wait.

If you do want to jump in, Toshiba announced last month that it will start shipping HD DVD players in Europe mid-November (model HD-E1) and early December (model HD-XE1).

Re: When the hell will HD DVD players be available in Europe?

The only positive thing I've read about so far is that they do not plan to include region-coding...

Re: When the hell will HD DVD players be available in Europe?

Alas, that’s not the case. Initial products don’t incorporate regional coding but the DVD Forum is working on a HD DVD regional system to be introduced soon. In fairness, it's the fault of the movie studios who are demanding it and not the hardware manufacturers but it's still lunacy if you ask me.

There’s a recent piece on this over at EMediaLive: http://www.emedialive.com/Articles/R...rticleID=11877

I was talking about Toshiba.

Re: When the hell will HD DVD players be available in Europe?

It doesn’t matter. The DVD Forum (of which Toshiba is part) is responsible for setting all HD DVD specifications. If regional codes are eventually adopted as a requirement everyone will have to conform.

Nobody can force them to update their oldish devices too. We have had this before, remember??!

Re: When the hell will HD DVD players be available in Europe?

Now you’re discussing existing rather than new units. Nobody? While it’s likely that the Forum will exempt existing players it’s not a given. As you know, all Toshiba HD DVD players incorporate flash firmware as well as Internet connection (obviously not the case in the early DVD universe) and PC software is easily upgradeable to add additional functions/restrictions. Until the Forum, Toshiba, et. al. publicly proclaim their intentions, it’s not safe to assume anything.
