Re: TY making HD-DVD-R

Hmmm any news of them making Blu Ray? It looks like Blu Ray will win but I don't want to start any format wars here.

We all know there's a number of Blu Ray writers already out and the PS3 is also using Blu ray, I think it's silly for TY to go out and make HDDVD. They should simply copy whatever moves verbatim make for now, as Verbatim is their biggest competitor as far as making the best quality media is concerned.

Aww. A decision similar to the DVD-R DL decision.
What kind of consulting service have they called?

Re: TY making HD-DVD-R

The fact alone that Sony is a big player in Blu-Ray may tip some the other way. (Like Paramount - though i'm not saying they decide for HD-DVD just bc Sony is behind Blu-Ray)

Mitsubishi/verbatim supports both formats.

No that one seems to be based on that Toshiba +MS pulled there wallet.

It should be clear that at this moment to make most profit on content at this moment is to support both formats like Warner does.

Also in TY case it should actually be easier to support the sony format because sony is involved. Because TY and Sony have quite some business together.

Re: TY making HD-DVD-R

Woohoo, once again TY backs a format with nearly zero sales potential (no HD DVD burners are readily available outside very expensive laptops). Honestly, do they even think about the formats they're supporting anymore?

Well, all hope isn't lost though. I've heard a few rumblings of a team effort between TY and another company to produce BD-R media. Although that was a while ago now.

TY must have realized they can no longer compete on the more popular formats so they concentrate on the least popular new media

I would think they would focus on DVD+RDL before bringing out any HiDef media just yet... But I don't know of any inside info or likely rumours pointing to them supporting DVD+RDLs. But yeah, they will probably support both BD-R and HD DVD-R for a little bit. Although until they actually LAUNCH a product, there are no guarentees with TY.

Re: TY making HD-DVD-R

Well DVD+RDL as well as DVD+R is a dead format over here for standalone DVD recorders so there is no interest in producing DVD+RDL for TY at least not for the moment....Maybe this will change after a similar thing to CPRM will be widely available with DVD+R/DL and supported by makers of hardware.

Yeah, that may be the case for Japan... but the demand for DVD+RDL in North America and Europe alone is enough to justify production for most manufacturers. But TY is very odd compared to most media manufacturers. I think it is because media is not a big componant of their overall business (although the same could be said of Mitsubishi).

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if TY stopped manufacturing optical media in the next 3-4 years.

I had similar thoughts when looking at TY businesses, optical media is hard to make much profit from, why bother if other markets offer better profitability.

As far as i know -R DL is very popular in Japan and also Yuden is very strong in their home market. Seen from that point the decision made perfectly good sense.

One of the reasons might be that they don't seem to see themselves as a company that is directly serving end-users, but only a reseller serving one. Take their own "That's" brand for example. I bet they could make a ton of money if they brought that one to Europe and the States and gave knowledgable end-users a sure source of Yuden-media. Instead they're limiting it to their home market.

I'm not sure. If they're negatively affected by the currently ongoing consolidation they haven't shown any sign about it (or i haven't seen them). It looks like they're going through more or less OK. Also i'm under the impression that they are practically owning the disc-duplicator media supplying market (world wide!) and that's probably where their main business is (again not the end-user, as above). Since the consolidation now has reached the 'bottom' in the sense that quality is starting to suffer seriously people will notice and start looking for reliable media. I think Yuden will rather profit from the situation.
