Depends what you want:
Bought DVD version has video-codec MPEG2 in 720x480(576) and you never know if you get a DVD5 or DVD9.
Recoded Blu-Ray to DVD9 has video-codec H264 (way better than MPEG2) at resolution 1920x1080.
You can't play it in a normal DVD-SA, but we are talking about Blu-Ray.

So decide for yourself what looks better!

In RipBot in 2pass-mode you can lock size to DVD5=4480MB, DVD9=8150 and for Blu-Ray you can insert something above 22000MB
(haven't calculated correct value for myself, only know that some ppl recode to Blu-Ray-SL)

But for myself it is quite sufficent to recode to 8GB and safe some money:
Verbatim DVD+DL 8x costs around 1 Euro,
Cheapest BD-R 2x costs around 7 Euro

Re: Tryin to "shrink" a Blu-Ray backup

In my eyes even the quality loss from 28GB to 8GB isn't that noticable.
Most BD movies are overkilled with bitrate and a lousy encoder.
So you can archieve nearly same quality with much lower bitrate and good old high quality x264 (open source) encoder.

Hm, am late, now off to work...

Re: Tryin to "shrink" a Blu-Ray backup

He told you exactly how. He ran it through RipBot which reencoded it to fit. It'll still be 1080p, just smaller. It's not a quick process, though.

Re: Tryin to "shrink" a Blu-Ray backup

I have to check that out then. But re-encoding? How's the quality compare to the original?

I can imagine! Even without reencoding the process is long.

Re: Tryin to "shrink" a Blu-Ray backup

I haven't done that title myself, but, the ones I've done the quality has been excellent. It will of course depend on how big the original video is and how much you need to shrink it. Just like DVD's. Personally I've not the patience for doing this very often. I simply make movie only ISOs and call it good. But I have no burner so shrinking isn't quite as important to me as it would be to someone who wants to fit it on a SL BD-R/E.

Even that was written in thes thread before.
Before further question in that direction, define "Quality"!!

SSIM? PSNR? Blockiness? Ringing? Bitrate? Quants?

It's individual, because it's depend on point of view.
There is no universal measurement of quality.

Encode a movie and look if it is sufficent for you!

Re: Tryin to "shrink" a Blu-Ray backup

I'm guessing we will soon see a Blu-ray in DVD quality.
But still have Pop-up menu, PIP and BD-Live.

Oh wait, there's no utility to keep the menu yet, right?

Re: Tryin to "shrink" a Blu-Ray backup

Zaina, no there isnt yet
Also, about the quality, i just tested it on a BD-RE, and the Quality was SUPER. I did not see any difference, this is also because bl uses a umounghes decoder space. I have a Sony Bravia 107 CM telly, and i dont see checkerboard or something like that. The only thing i saw was somethings some grain in dark sections, so i put the original in.. an it was also there so... i cant see it... and i'm a real quality cry baby..

but i can tell you.. it took a long time to encode.. like 2 days.. but i have Pass 2

enjoy!

doesn't really matter, you can always re-encode the movie. RipBot264 does a amazing job

i did Underworld as a test, from about 24gb MPEG2 to 11gb h264. i was watching both movies side by side trying to notice anything. there wasn't anything really noticeable.

Re: Tryin to "shrink" a Blu-Ray backup

Why don't just buy and use 300GB or more External Hard drive for backup purposes, they are so cheap these day. Economically make more sense than using Blu-ray disc which way more expensive.

I think beause not everyone uses a PC (or HTPC) to watch their blu-ray movies. For me, I use my PC only to "review" the blu-ray (usually from HD video source) and if I want to enjoy it (either blu-ray movies or burned from other HD source), I will watch it on my blu-ray player and crank up the volume of my audio system.

But TCAS has a good point, I think until Blu-ray disc becomes inexpensive, we can always back them up in harddrive and burn it later. But even that, a 1TB harddrive can only store about 20-ish blu-ray movies.

Re: Tryin to "shrink" a Blu-Ray backup

Has anyone had any problems using the RipBot program?

I installed all the necessary software about 4 or 5 times and each time I try to run it, it tells me that FFDShow is not installed when in fact I know I installed it. Anyone else encountering this problem? Anyone know how to by pass this problem?
