I called them today and they are giving me 10% off cause it's taken this long. So 169.99 - 10% +tax. They also said it should be in tomorrow but i will believe it when i see it. I think i get 2 in the box and 5 free IIRC.

I have 300 cued up with them both running about 3 minutes apart. Reg DVD is the one 3 minutes ahead. The audio is no big deal i can fix that but want to know the video difference. Anyway i have it cued up for tomorrow. My wife went to bed and i need someone to exchange the DVI/HDMI cables for the back of the TV as i only have one or mess with it myself

Edit:
I hope OP doesn't mind my meaningless rambling

Well the verdict is in. HD-DVD is better for my comparison with the movie 300. Regular DVD's don't have as clear picture as HD-DVD's do. To each their own i still say. Nothing wrong with regular DVD's. I'm still going to buy them.

But the wife likes HD-DVD better so we're keeping the player The price was right for these days

300 is a poor disc for comparison. It has an intentionally grainy image. Get the Planet Earth (BBC release) series set.

Re: Toshiba HD A3

I also think animation movies give excellent details, like Cars, Happy Feet, Open Season etc. I collect them and good to keep children and their friends quite and sit nicely.

Unfortunately most of those titles release in Blu-ray format.

Agreed. Honestly the most noticeable differences that I find are on the pre-1990s release titles (movies originally released prior to the 1990s). There is absolutely no comparison between these HD-DVD releases and their standard DVD counterparts. The colors on the HD DVD releases are amazingly sharp and vibrant while the standard DVD releases are often dull, pixelated and often show the imperfections of the original film print (ie lines, ect.). I did a side by side comparison of the movie Battle of The Bulge between DVD and HD-DVD. It was like comparing an old worn out VHS tape to the sharpest quality new release and this was with me using an Oppo Digital DV-981HD 1080P upconversion DVD Player for the DVD release. For the HD-DVD I was using the 360 HD-DVD add-on for my 360 (prior to my 360 crapping out on me). I also saw an amazing release for Mutiny On The Bounty on HD-DVD which you just can't compare with any standard definition releases. Anyways, outside of documentaries and computer generated films, a good way to flex the muscles of your high-def players are to pick up some older release titles.

Re: Toshiba HD A3

I bought the A3 a week ago. So far so good, great sound and image.
> >
One of the decision factors was the upconversion to 1080i from standard DVDs, but I have my system on component video cables. My Toshiba 30HF85 TV monitor do has a HDMI input, but not my Kenwood VR 7070 receiver, so I got the system on component video setup (I also have a Dish receiver connected on it).
> >
With my standard definition DVDs, the player shows a message that the signal will be output in 480p and also the monitor shows a grey bar on every side of the screen (I was hoping this player will eliminate that, the same also happened with my old Toshiba SD-3950 model).
> >
I tried to re-master a couple of my SD DVDs to see if the upconversion to 1080i in component did in fact work. Not much luck with the DVD-Rs I tried though, the player says it does not recognize the format. I tried with both TDK DVD-R 16x and Fujifilm DVD-R 16x. Which media brands anyone on this thread used?

You should really get an HDMI cable to connect your A3 to your TV.. You should see an improvement over component as well as freeing some clutter behind your set (1 cable for hdmi vs. 3 for component video and 2 RCA cables for audio).. Your receiver should still work with the optical audio coming out from the A3..

As far as "re-mastering" SD DVD's you should just do a straight backup of them since they get up-converted by your player so their is no need to "re-master" them.. Use a good burning program and try at a slower burn if you still have problems with your A3 recognizing them.. All of my backups play fine on my player..

You should also make sure your A3's firmware is updated to version 1.3.. It should show up as 1.3/1.1 in your players menu..
