SW-5582 won't burn audio CDs

Hi -- I just got one of these blu-ray burners, pre-installed in an external USB enclosure from OWC. It burns data to BD, DVD and CD flawlessly.

However, when I try to burn an audio CD (CD-DA), the drive burns the lead-in and then shuts down (blue light goes out). Sometimes after a long time (5 minutes, 10 minutes or more) I'll get an 'invalid write state' or 'device unavailable' error. When I eject the disc, it's got a small lead-in ring burned into it. If I put the disc in another machine, it recognizes as an audio-cd but won't play (no tracks have been written).

I've tried this on 2 different computers (Vista Premium and XP Pro), 5 different brands of blanks, and with Nero 7, Nero 8, and Burrrn.

I've fairly computer-savvy (I'm a software developer and also have 10+ years of CD and DVD authoring experience), just to give you a baseline here. It seems to me this might be some sort of firmware issue, since if the drive was defective I'd think I wouldn't be able to burn CDs at all, and like I say, burning data to them works fine.

The drive reports its firmware as B110, but I haven't been able to determine if that's the most current or not.

Any ideas....?

Use cdburnerxp OR Burrrn for burning CDDA. Not Nero!

Re: SW-5582 won't burn audio CDs

I've used Nero for years and never had problems, burning many kinds of discs, including hundreds of audio CDs, on dozens of drives. I'm having a hard time believing that's the issue.

Also, as stated, I've used burrrn and it's causing the EXACT same problem as Nero is (also with 2 different machines running 2 different OS's), regarding the drive shutting off. So again, I don't think it's my application.

Does anybody know the current firmware for this drive?

Re: SW-5582 won't burn audio CDs

Thanks chef -- One thing I noticed -- I did pull down cdburnerxp. I did a comparison on the 'Get recorder info' output for the SW-5582 and the regular lightscribe DVD burner I have, and saw that the SW-5582 says that it doesn't support DAO, DAO 96 or CD-Text DAO. It does claim to support TAO and SAO, however, but I wasn't able to burn an audio CD in TAO either. Basically burns the lead-in, then the drive 'goes to sleep'. However, it burns data onto all 3 formats (CD, DVD, Blu-Ray) flawlessly. Very strange that Matshita would not allow the burning of redbook audio... has ANYBODY been able to do this on this drive?

Re: SW-5582 won't burn audio CDs

They probably had no intention to invest time on such writestrategies and CD in general ... Maybe that will be "fixed" with later firmwares, but I wouldnt count on that.
If I were you, I would contact DELL and pester them (to force Matshita) to release an firmware update...so DELL could do that aswell.
I wouldnt care about CDDA in TAO mode. Have you tried a data-cd in TAO mode??
