Recommendation For Good HD DVD Player?

Tried using the search function but not working right not.

I'm looking for a economical HD DVD player to last a year or two until the new HD technology players come out.
Any suggestions?

I Looked at these two so far...

RCA DRC255N

Samsung DVD-HD841

Upconversion is largely marketing hype. The only real advantage is derived from using the DVI/HDMI digital connection as opposed to component analogue connects.
This advantage should not be underestimated, but the difference you see will largely depend on your monitor.

Thx for the reply! I just got a 52" Toshiba DLP and will have HD Direct TV to go with it later in the week. I was wondering about the "Upconversion" process and how well that would work.

Re: Recommendation For Good HD DVD Player?

The DLP's are great monitors, you will enjoy it. In theory, an upconverting DVD player should handle the signal entirely in digital form, and so there are advantages because it's not going through a D-A conversion and sent via analogue to the TV. Slightly better contrast and color should be the result. You will not, however see a "sharper" image. You have a pretty good monitor there, so the difference between component and HDMI will be small. And of course, GIGO still rules. A crappy looking movie will still be a crappy looking movie. In my experience, the single biggest problems with DVD's is that they are mastered fairly poorly. But anyway, if you can get past the issue of needing multiple HDMI inputs on your monitor, by all means use the digital out on the DVD.

I guess an Xbox (chipped) using component cable would be just as good or even a bit better, I have no idea if it can handle lanczos resizing though which is the recommended resizing algorithm if you want quality.

Keep in mind neither player your looking at is a true HD-DVD player. They are DVD players that can upconvert to 1080i, and therefore nowhere near as a claear and precise of a picture as HD-DVD.
