Re: A Physically Damaged TDK Blu-ray Disc

It didn't break but looks like an attempt to peel the recording surface?

Was it unburned? Either way a financial hit or a data hit

How did it get from the floor to the toilet? Are your toilets in the floor? To bad for you. Hope you can return it.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt.

That disc is probably unreadable now. I'm guessing that this has cost you around £10-15.

What a disaster.

Re: A Physically Damaged TDK Blu-ray Disc

So much for Blu-ray's ultra-tough coating if it turns out that this coating is fixed with a weak adhesive.

As the laser lens in a Blu-ray drive hovers very close to the disc surface, I would strongly advice against loading this disc, as the laser will almost certainly strike the split part of the disc, potentially leaving you out of pocket on an expensive Blu-ray drive also.

As Rolling suggested, it would be worth bringing it back to see if you can get it exchanged, as dropping a disc should not cause this.

Re: A Physically Damaged TDK Blu-ray Disc

This does not bode well for the long term reliability of BD discs. I drop DVD's all the time and never see any damage except scratches.

It looks like the BD disc is constructed much like a CDR, (only in reverse), which is definitely NOT good. HD-DVD discs are constructed just like a DVD. So here it seems is some evidence that HD-DVD is superior in one respect.

Re: A Physically Damaged TDK Blu-ray Disc

Well I was curious so I dropped a 0.5oz/15gr BD-R disc from a 2nd floor (15ft/5m). It didn't break, glue still bonds but lots of nicks, compare to the first post --smooth edges....

I did actually. Two small nicks on the right from 6ft, the other two from 15ft.

Good thinking Your disc does not look like the same brand from OP's pic. Maybe you have better discs?

This is a whole new dimension to media testing that I never even thought of before reading this thread!

Problem is though, not everybody is going to be dropping their BDs to the floor very often. Especially when you consider how expensive the technology is.

Not the point. If dropping it was sufficient to separate the layers from the polycarbonate stamper, then other things could do it as well, like age, heat, moisture, etc. Simply review all the issues with CDRs separating from the reflective layer. I had no idea that BD discs were made this way.

Well, BD requires hard coating of the recording side, so you will have fewer scratches from rubbing. Compared to BD coating, DVD polycarbonate is really susceptible to scratching.

There isn't anything inherently wrong with the 0.1 mm protective layer, except when the adhesive doesn't get properly cured - in which case you can pretty much peel it off.

I've seen Ritek DVD DL discs where the two 0.6 mm substrates split from simple bending, so (HD-)DVDs are not immune from bad curing of adhesive either.

I never have but where's the tp roll? Also why would a person take a BR disc in there and let a disc drop into one of those?

The rolls are on the wall... I suppose one would take a disc in there to spend some quality time with it, undisturbed
