LITE-ON LH-2B1S 187C Booting Problem !!!

Hi All,

I have in my possession ( 5 ) brand-new Lite On LH-2B1S 187C Blu-Ray drives with Firmware 7 ( MFD Janurary 2007 - Only Firmware 6 is available on the website ). The problem.......I cannot get any of them to be seen as a bootable drive. I noticed the problem when trying to use one while building a new server. It was connected to a Silicon Image 3114 4-Channel SATA controller with current updated BIOS. I was simply trying to use the standard boot order of FLOPPY-BLURAY-HARD DRIVE ARRAY; when in this boot order the floppy drive light would stay on and the screen would just display a flashing cursor and wouldn't boot into server 2003. If I changed the boot order to FLOPPY-HARD DRIVE ARRAY-BLURAY, then Win2003 would detect the drive and the drive would work just fine.

SO......I took the drives home and tried them on my other Sabrent PCI SATA card which also uses a Silicone Image 3114 controller ( also has latest FW ). I 1st tried to connect the BluRay up to port 0 and tried booting from several known good CD's and DVD's ( the drive lit up and detected them correctly ), but the controller would not even detect the drive. I then placed a blank SATA hard drive on port 0 and the BluRay drive on port 1. After powering back on, the card detected both the blank hard drive and the BluRay drive, but now showed "NO BOOT DEVICE AVAILABLE" when trying the same known good bootable CD's and DVD's in the BluRay drive ( while the drive still detected the media changes correctly ).

SO......Now I wanted to determine if the problem was with the Drive or the SATA controllers that I was using. I then tried hooking the BluRay drive up to a $1,000.00 3ware SX-9550 SATA RAID controller, and the same thing happened "NO BOOT DEVICE AVAILABLE". So now I see that the problem is with the drives somehow. Has anyone experienced these types of problems with their drives and/or firmware v6/7 ???????? Thanks in advance for your help !!!!

P.S. - A special "THANKS !!!!! :-) " to Liggy who helped me to understand my previous NEC FW problem.

Re: LITE-ON LH-2B1S 187C Booting Problem !!!

Hello Again All,

I thought I'd let you know what I found out about this drive.....

1st off I've solved the boot problem. It turns out that LiteOn actually has Firmware AL09 for this drive ( will update inside of windows ); but you won't find it under the "Americas" logon section of their website, it can only be found under the "Global" part of their website. Upgrading to that FW and setting the boot order to FLOPPY-ATAPI CDROM-HARD DRIVE ARRAY now lets the server boot properly. Also at that site you can download the manual in .PDF form, which incendently, wasn't inside any of the ( 5 ) retail boxes I have. Also, the ( 3 ) jumpers in the back of the drive should stay unjumpered as they are for LiteOn's diagnostics as far as I can tell so far. I did contact LiteOn's support about the question of will these drives burn 50 Gig DL media; their support people say NO, but the Manual says YES; So in true hacker spirit, I'll just have to get some 50 gig media, try it myself, and then I'll post the results back here when I find out.
