LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp This thread is to collect my findings about LGs GGW-H20N (HL-DT-ST BD-RE GGW-H20L) with Firmware YL02. The drive is of the SATA variant and connected via PATA-SATA bridge (Marvell) to an Intel ICH4 UDMA 100 PATA port.

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Firmware Update A firmware update to YL02 with the drive connected externally via USB to SATA bridge (Scythe Kama Connect SCUPS-1000, JMicron) was not possible. The Update would start but hang. The update succeeded with the Marvell bridge.

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Ritek, Type 7, 700MB, 52x, as sold by Maxell 40x P-CAV writing speed selected, no slowdowns. 11210 C1 errors, 63 C2 errors. The result can be judged ok, since these media seem to come in a mixed quality. For comparison here the Plextor Premium2 has no problems with them (without PowerRec!): http://club.cdfreaks.com/1859153-post102.html here he has (with PoweRec!): http://club.cdfreaks.com/1859156-post103.html C1/C2/CU and Beta/Jitter scans done with the Plextor Premium:

| Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Taiyo Yuden +R 16x (Yuden000 T03 00), as sold by Verbatim Burn speed 16x P-CAV, no slowdowns. While the error levels seem to be consistent with what i get from other drives with this batch of media, there seems to be so be a problem that let the B/J-Test fail. | Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Taiyo Yuden -R 16x (TYG03), as sold by Panasonic Burn speed 16x P-CAV, no slowdowns. The error levels are somewhat higher to what i get from other drives with this batch of media. Again there seems to be a problem that let the B/J-Test fail. This time this coincides with a PIF spike. The error levels (especially PIE) are somewhat higher to what i get from other drives with this batch of media. See for example Samsung SH S202N: http://club.cdfreaks.com/1918375-post10.html Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans done in PX-760A: |

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Sony -R 16x (Sony 16D1), as sold by Sony Burn speed 16x P-CAV, no slowdowns. Aside from a lone PIF spike of little consequence, a very good result. Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans done in PX-760A:

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp CMC Magnetics -R 16x (CMC MAG AM3), as sold by Philips (labeled made in Taiwan) Burn speed 16x P-CAV, no slowdowns. Quite a bit of PIF. Again B/J scanning fails at the first occurrence of a PIF spike. Compared to other drives (media from same spindle): http://club.cdfreaks.com/1922762-post15.html http://club.cdfreaks.com/1600644-post108.html Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans done in PX-760A:

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp TDK +R 16x (CMC MAG M01 0), as sold by TDK Burn speed 16x P-CAV, no slowdowns. A bad result. Especially since the drive continued to write a full speed and did apparently not notice the rising problems. Compared to other drives (media from same spindle): http://club.cdfreaks.com/1922811-post18.html http://club.cdfreaks.com/1637016-post126.html Burst (PIE), Burst (POE), Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans done in PX-760A:

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Moser Baer India +R 16x (MBIPG101 R05 01), as sold by Imation (labeled made in India) Burn speed 16x P-CAV, no slowdowns. Aside from a lone PIF spike of little consequence, a good result. The two PIF-clusters might be an individual media problem. Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans done in PX-760A:

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Preliminary DVD-DL results A word of warning to all who want to use this drive to burn DVD-DL media: So far i've wasted two perfectly good Verbatim +RDL 8x media while trying to run tests. In both cases the writing process 'hung' after writing some MB into the disc. Since my current setup works just fine with DL on any other drive I have I supect the drive to be at fault. I'll report back once if find more time for further testing.

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Nice review. How do you find it at reading DVDs? I tend to find it seems to give up reading and the error correction is not that great compared (using CDSpeed) to some of my other drives.

Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp I finally found some time to continue testing. I'm still not sure what caused my earlier problems with DL, but the only cause i was able to narrow it down to seems to be the fact that different software was trying to access the drive at the same time (notably Plextools, CD-DVD-Speed and ImgBurn running at the same time). Interestingly this has not been an issue with SL media and never an issue either with any other drive i used. Maybe there is a problem with software being able to 'lock' the drive while using it?

| Re: LG GGW-H20L mini review by hwp Taiyo Yuden +R 16x (Yuden000 T03 00), as sold by Verbatim Firmware: YL03 Burn speed 16x P-CAV, no slowdowns. Very good result. Compared to YL02: http://club.cdfreaks.com/2015110-post7.html This time the Beta/Jitter test completes and there are noticably less PI errors. TA-Test says, very good 4/4, good 3/4, very good 4/4.
