Re: LG GBW-H20L, GBC-H20L, BE06 Blu-ray drives

Can someone who actually owns one of these new drives check to see if it plays HD DVD media? I know the specs don't mention HD DVD support but I'd like confirmation that the specs are correct. Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply!

Nope it won't even recognize a HD-DVD movie at all.

Sorry

Well HD-DVD is a dead format and i don't think that there will be any more manufactures that will still support it.

Best Buy sells it online but not in the stores. However, Circuit City sells it in stores, that's where I got mine. Both stores are the same price, MSRP of $279.95.

Re: LG GBW-H20L, GBC-H20L, BE06 Blu-ray drives

Last weekend I received a BE06 LU10 (external blu-ray writer). It refuses to wirte platinum BD-RE's (MID=RITEK). It burns a LG BD-RE that came with the drive, but very slooooow (80 min for like 20GB).
So I assumed there would be a firmware update to take care of the new platinum disks.
Because the firmware-upgrade software that came with the drive did not find an upgrade, I took the unit apart and found out it containes a GGW-H20L (thats the name of the sata unit here in the eu). After removing the burner from the housing and removing ALL wiring, I connected it to a sata-port on my desktop so I could upgrade the unit with newer firmware from the LG site (there is new firmware for the GGW-H20L). I found YL03 for the GGW-H20L, my BE06 is YE03 (naming logic seems to match). Strangely enough the sata unit showed up on my pc as an BE06LU10 in stead of a GGW-H20L (which is writen on a big sticker on the unit). And the lg-upgrade does not work because it doesn't find a GGW-H20L.
So this plan didn't work....
I wonder if someone knowes how to flash this BE06LU10 with the latest GGW-H20L firmware (is there a general flash utility?)? And does anybody have a clue as to why this unit would have different firmware than the GGW-H20L, allthough it is labeled (internally) GGW-H20L?
Any help apreciated, otherwise when there is no new firmware I will return the unit.
The dutch LG customer service wrote to me to stick with the advised disks, but that seems very strange to me. Its like buying a car that will only run on shell gas

A BD-RE with Platinum brand? Hmm, never heard of it. I would be very careful. In fact, our experts and knowledgable members in the Blank Media forum do not recommend Platinum brand for DVD blanks (click here or click the arrow on the right of Posted by below):

What software did you use to burn? Depends on your burning software, in Nero -disable BD Defect Management, in ImgBurn -enable DVD-RAM / BD-RE FastWrite option. This should disable error checking and speed up the burn.

No not yet. Unless ala42 can come up with something. Given the risk of crossflashing in general, and especially for these expensive drives, I would think twice.

It's a good advice actually. If you feed your burners with good media, you can expect good burning quality.

Can you check with DVD Identifier what is the complete mediacode eq RITEK-BW1-000 or RITEK-BW1-001. According to ala42, one of them is not supported:
