Hitachi-LG Data Storage Develop the Industry's First 4x Blu-ray Disc Drive

Tuesday July 25, 6:00 am ET

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 25, 2006--Hitachi-LG Data Storage (under CEO Kazuya Hori) has developed the half-height Blu-ray disc drive GBW-H10N for built-in use in PCs that achieves 4x high-speed recording for the first time in the industry. Production is slated to begin in late July 2006.
This product or so-called super-multi Blu-ray disc drive can record and play back Blu-ray format discs BD-R and BD-RE, play back BD-ROM, record and play back all-format DVDs (DVD-RAM/R/RW, +R/RW), as well as CD-R and CD-RW, and play back DVD-ROM and CD-ROM.

-- Outline of 4x Blu-ray Disc Recording Drive "Super Multi Blue
GBW-H10N"

Product Model Shipping Remarks
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Blu-ray disc drive GBW-H10N OEM
for built-in use in PCs (with ATAPI interface) July 2006 product

The GBW-H10N can record and play back 25GB large-capacity Blu-ray discs BD-R and BD-RE suitable for storing high-quality images. For BD-R in particular, this product achieves quadrupled data transfer speed as fast as 144 Mbps for the first time in the industry. Video data saved on a HDD can be transferred to a disc and a large volume of data backed up in a short time. Moreover, the BD-RE 2x recording speed is realized as the currently highest speed in the industry.

Also for DVD/CD other than Blu-ray discs, the GBW-H10N provides recording and playback functions similar to those of the HLDS conventional super-multi disc drive. Only with this drive can you enjoy 12 types of BD/DVD/CD discs.

By combining the technologies of affiliates, HLDS commercialized the product through comprehensive development starting from key components to the final end product. To support BD/DVD/CD in particular, HLDS newly developed a highly functional optical head and a DSP (1) capable of high-level signal processing in support of various recording formats. In addition to these key components, the LD driver with write strategy, buffer underrun error prevention, and many other technologies accumulated in conventional super-multi drive development were adopted to ensure very stable recording and playback.

(1) Digital Signal Processor (DSP): A digital integrated circuit for controlling recording and playback

The main technologies developed and employed to realize this drive are as follows:

-- 4x High-speed Recording (Blu-ray Disc)
Laser driver IC for data transfer speed as fast as 144 Mbps
was developed, with a high-output blue laser to accommodate
the quadrupled speed employed, and the write-strategy
optimized to realize 4x recording on BD-R (SL). Thus, the
recording time is reduced by half of that of 2x recording.

-- CAV High-speed Playback Up to 4.8x (Blu-ray Disc)
The adaptive equalization and adaptive Viterbi decoding of
high-speed playback signals achieves low-error playback. As a
result, BD-ROM and BD-R (closed disc) can be played back using
4.8x CAV even faster than recording.

-- Highly functional Pickup and DSP
The recording and playback of various discs were realized by
developing a new single-lens 3LD pickup capable of recording
and playing BD, DVD, and CD and a new highly integrated,
highly functional DSP that integrates conventional DVD and CD
signal processing, as well as BD signal processing.

Re: LG GBW-H10N 4x Blu-ray Burner

Thanks Kenshin. I've been watching this BD drive since the specs are higher than the other 1st generation BD burners (ie Pioneer, Panasonic etc). 12x PCAV on DVD+R/-R.

But playback copy protected BD movies still will be problems since it needs more than this player alone. Software updates will be available from WinDVD soon. Then we also need graphic card and display with HDMI/HDCP compliance.

Re: LG GBW-H10N 4x Blu-ray Burner

Yup, interesting toy.

Zevia, such gfx cards are now available, eg. from Sapphire and MSI. I'd hoped they would eqip HDMI/HDCP on more powerful models ........

Re: LG GBW-H10N 4x Blu-ray Burner

Don't forget also the monitor will require HDMI/HDCP input, otherwise you will only get present DVD equivalent quality (supposing we'll notice a big deal of difference at smaller monitor sizes, and want it).
This will require a considerable pocket effort...just to comply with what DRM stands for.

Yup, most peeps get too excited and forget about that important part of the HDCP chain...

Such upgrades cost far less than Blu-ray burners and Blu-ray players. Getting both Blu-ray burner and Blu-ray player cost at least US$1,500. New monitors with HDMI/HDCP are naturally based on the latest-generation LCD panels. The input option alone can't cost that much. You just need another AD board and more cables.

And to use Blu-ray drive for burning, you don't really need anything other than a PC. Movie playbacks? Better download HD-ripped files of 1920*1080 on HDD's and play them on your Conroe machines.

Re: LG GBW-H10N 4x Blu-ray Burner

You may be right, but you have to consider all the money you spend over the already expensive drive.
Hope you got the answer about the input option, because with all the new "secure computing" definitions I fear the system will require to know if the end device meets their criteria and that can mean you have to buy new "compatible" monitors to connect to your "compatible" graphics boards, unless there is a way to spare our machines and avoid such hard work to them.

Budget-conscious consumers should avoid buying anything like this in the first place. Get a US$29 18x DVD burner and be happy. Until a 8x Blu-ray/ HD DVD burner costs under US$100.

Re: LG GBW-H10N 4x Blu-ray Burner

Now let's see some scans...

LG GBW-H10N Blu-ray, Firmware GL04
MCC004 (Verbatim 16x DVD+R) burned at 12x

1. Burned at 12x PCAV in 5:59 minutes. Pretty fast!
2. Disc quality scan by Liteon SHM-165P6S.
3. Disc quality scan by BenQ DW1655.
4. Transfer rate test in NEC ND-4570A.

Excellent write quality and smooth read-back test.

Re: LG GBW-H10N 4x Blu-ray Burner

The jitter in the first scan looks questionable ... however ... *sigh* if only the drive was cheaper :| I would definitely want one .... *sigh* i'll jump on it when it reaches $300AUD!

I'm thinking Blu_Ray for DATA .... 10 discs = 250Gb for SL ... can't wait for BD-R.DL which means 5 discs = 250Gb ! Easy backup solution finally, even if it's a little expensive. BD-RE migh work effectively for backup. Don't want to think about burning 4.38Gb at a time which currently is a tire - hence I've never backed up my "data" drives.

Nice update.
Seems that Mount Rainier is a dead cow and still only 2mb Buffer?

Good one Michael

I , for one , would not buy a BD-RE drive untill this DRM crap is either cracked or companies let go of it

Re: LG GBW-H10N 4x Blu-ray Burner

GBW-H10N is selling in South Korea for about US$1,000 including 10 percent domestic VAT tax.

http://pc.danawa.com/price_new.html?...=861&cate2=878

Of course, I'm not interested to have one if offered for US$200 because the media are still highly priced (at like US$30 per 23GB when one can buy a 300GB for under US$100.) Meanwhile, Samsung has officially announced T166 series 16MB buffer SATA II HDD product family last week in Seoul.
