Re: HD DVD and Blue Ray

There are 100GB 2.5-inch HDDs, very portable and very light. Blu-ray uses a lot larger discs.

Let them "fight", it's better for "us" the consumers.

80GB 2.5-inch HDD 140,000 Won now. Cheaper than 10 5x DVD-RAM. Also cheaper than 20 3x DVD-RAM.

The first Blu-ray and HD-DVD media when they are mass produced will probably sell like US$1 per disk and very soon (soon could mean months to a few years) the price will fall to US$0.1.

Re: HD DVD and Blue Ray

Hmm, i think portable HDD's still arent very practical, they are not as shock proof as a polycarbonate disc

Also, HD's are cheap, yes, but i dont use DVD-RAM anyway, i use +R and -R

If i get rewritable, and "normal" (WORM) blank media, i'm happy.
I dont need random access.

Are you sure a DVD disc is more shock-resistent than a portable HDD? Can you explain why hardly any company uses DVD for portable players and portable camcorders? Electronics companies are more and more adopting HDDs for important reasons and shock-proof is one of the many reasons.

I would agree if you said a 1GB miniSD memory card is safer than a 100GB 2.5-inch HDD or 20GB 1.8-inch HDD. Smaller devices use 1.5-inch or 1-inch HDDs. After all, people don't throw notebooks straight against a stone wall as hard as they can. People don't throw HDD-based recorders and portable players either. I haven't seen anyone who has problems regarding such an issue.

And Blu-ray is rewritable just as DVD-RAM. It's natural to compare the random access and random write performances of various devices since Blu-ray technology was invented for rewritability in mind from the beginning. That is also one of the reasons why Blu-ray had cartridge. It's unsure yet how many Blu-ray media wrapped in cartridges are going to be produced in the coming five years.

Absolutely. And you don't go lending your HD to your friend while you sit twiddling your thumbs with nothing. You make a copy and don't count the cost.
