Blu-ray and HD DVD Hardware, Software and Blank Media Discuss, HD DVD to AVI? at International Chat: High Definition forum; This maybe a daft question, but has anybody (by this I mean anyone in the world) been able to rip the video off an HD DVD or BluRay disc and play it independantly on a PC? Is it too soon, just wondering...

Re: HD DVD to AVI?

Actually, I just realised that you'd need a HD DVD/BluRay disc drive in your PC to even read the disc. Not sure if these exist yet. Do they?

Re: HD DVD to AVI?

HD-DVD - Not AFAIK
BluRay - Yes, but it's ~$1000 or a bit over £600 in Real Money

I'm not really interested in BluRay OR HD-DVD for movies - Unless you have a 1080p TV the picture quality is no different than DVD unless you're sitting right next to the TV.

For computer storage, HD-DVD doesn't have a prayer - The capacity is pathetic! 15GB?! Given how much they're likely to cost, it's not worth it over DVD+R DLs!

BluRay discs are also similarly (hideously) expensive, but at least 25GB is significantly more than dual-layer DVDs to justify the cost slightly more!
It's a bit like when DVDs first came out 'tho so I guess we'll be waiting a while for prices to drop; Last time I checked, a Single Layer BluRay-R disc (25GB) was £10
Dual Layer BD-R (50GB! Yup, you can already buy DL BluRay discs, while HD-DVD hasn't even got a single layer write-once, or even a PC drive yet!) was considerably more at £25 and a Dual Layer BD-RE (50GB, RW-disc) was a whopping £35!

At the moment, HD-DVD movies seem to have better quality than BluRay, but this is more down to the production and encoding process from what I've seen - Sony really need to pull their finger out and do some digital remastering on their movies instead of just scanning in film-stock (With all its scratches and imperfections) at a higher resolution!

What? You MUST be kidding me.
I don't own a 1080P TV, and the difference between DVD and HD-DVD is EASILY seen, there is NO QUESTION.
I do NOT sit right next to the TV either.
There are MANY users over at AVSFORUM that have these players(Especially HD-DVD, myself included) that own RPTVS, Projectors, etc.... and they will tell you different, blow up a picture to 110+ inches, and you will see the difference easily, my 57" CRT RPTV shows the difference easily as well.

See ya over in the HDDVD section.

Re: HD DVD to AVI?

DVD is 720 x 480. HDTV is 1920 x 1080. How can't anyone see the obvious difference? Unless your TV is really outdated, but all you need may be just a used 15-inch DSUB-15 monitor. I actually watched HDTV on a monitor that I picked up for free. It was much better than DVD at least.
