I voted yes. Maybe there is better technology out there so this would be a stepping stone to the next technology, I am totally impressed with the picture quality of the Blu ray so far. LG is supposed to release a Blu Ray/HD-DVD combo player soon. $$$$$. For pure entertainment purposes I haven't seen anything close.

Re: Do we really need the blue laser formats?

I can reduce all my dvd media by 1/6 just like with cd to dvd
100 dvd reduced to 17 blueray will mean that i don't have to shuffle disc to find what i want. higher capacity also mean faster transfer rate to your computer
in 2-3 years it will probably be around 100-200
4-5 years 50-99
and 6-7 years 30-40 bucks.
For those who want until it drops to 30 bucks, not only do you get to burn it faster you also save a lot of money so that's a much better investment then paying much more right now

I am, of course, talking about holographic discs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_memory

Then again, there have been reports of this since 2004, so who knows. Maybe they'll be really cheap in 2010 or so. I still think that the major backers of the current blue laser didn't want a competing product and that movie companies didn't want people to have the ability to store over 100 full length dvd movies on one disc.
Actually, I didn’t get into DVDs until 2005 even though I knew of them before they were even commercially available simply because very soon after DVDs were out, I had heard of the superior FMD and wanted to wait for that instead. Unfortunately C3D died and FMDs are in limbo, possibly being developed as DMDs in the future, so I finally gave in (mostly because VHS was becoming extinct) and got a DVD player.

What are you talking about? Are you saying that you would put several movies on each disc? That’s fine for trilogies and such, but it’s just sloppy maintenance to put a bunch of unrelated movies (even genre-similar movies) on the same disc. Each one should be self-contained. And of course it would cost-prohibitive for some time to come to do that just for temporary use (like a marathon disc as opposed to permanent archive).

That’s actually one reason that I don’t really care for ever-growing discs. I have no desire to put a dozen applications, games, etc. on one big disc just because it is much less organizable than keeping them self contained. Having ridiculously large discs means that there would be even more wasted space on them. Plus, unless they are rewritable and packet-writable (ie hard-drive like), they would be effectively useless for normal use: it would take a long time (and a ton of hd space) to prepare it for permanent burning. Gigantic discs are really only useful for storing massive image backups. They’d be great for the enterprise (and universities and stuff), but more or less useless for consumers.

And you have to replace your entire library every 10 years. Most people cannot afford to do that.
