Re: Buffalo launches 8x internal Blu-ray drive

Thx for the info. It's a re-badged Panasonic SW-5584. Buffalo will be using this for its new internal and external drives.

Might be the same thing for the new Sony BWU-300s...

Doh, the SW5584's look to be Made in China, as I feared. The previous SW5583's were also MIC.

I'm suddenly much less enthusiastic...

I'd still advise to be cautious. Sold in and shipped from Japan does not necessarily mean Made in Japan...

A good example is the Casio line of watches (G-Shocks, Pathfinders, etc). It is possible to get a watch shipped from Japan, a model/version only sold in the Japanese market, but it's Made in Thailand, China, etc. It's best to ask the seller first to avoid unnecessary surprises.

If you ask and don't get an answer, chances are it's "nay". If it's MIJ, the seller will likely answer promptly.

Yes, I would consider paying $399 for a MIJ Buffalo drive as well. But in this case, they are selling MIC products at MIJ prices. To me, that is not right, not fair. LOL. Sony has done that, just about every company has. If they want to make MIC products, at least adjust the price downwards accordingly. But the execs are pocketing same profits for lesser quality...well if the consumers don't particuarly care...I would probably do it too.

Re: Buffalo launches 8x internal Blu-ray drive

Also the TDK 2x can burn at 4x so maybe TDK 4x can burn 6x or 8x.

We really don't know until someone gets the drive.

Re: Buffalo launches 8x internal Blu-ray drive

The packaging and the specs on their website say that at the moment, only Panasonic 6x media can be burned at 8x. Not very exciting, but also not too shabby, since those are only 100 Yen more than other brands' 4x media (in 10pc packs).

Which leads me to a question... how "solid" are Buffalo-rebranded Panasonic products, in terms of writing quality and media suppport through firmware updates? I can get the Buffalo 816 for 30,000 Yen and the LG GGW-H20N for 24,000 Yen. From what I hear on the forum and in the review, the LG seems pretty reliable and already had a few FW updates, so it looks like a safe bet. However, the difference in price is small enough I feel tempted to go for the newer and faster Buffalo, if it is reasonably reliable. Any experience with this or one of their earlier products?

Re: Buffalo launches 8x internal Blu-ray drive

I've never had a problem with any of the Buffalo things I've had over there years. Both their products and their rival IO-Data are all generally pretty solid. I generally choose IO-Data if the price is similar on a peripheral I need, but thats really only because I think they look better.

Very nice!

If you get any of the newer Sony 6x BD-R's can you let us know what speed it supports them at?

Thanks

Re: Buffalo launches 8x internal Blu-ray drive

Sure can! The box and website say 6x, though, so I expect they will indeed be burned at 6x, until hopefully a firmware update.

The YSS benchmarks are probably exhaustive enough, but let me know if I can test anything. I already burned TDK 4x media at 2x... defect management enabled...

Re: Buffalo launches 8x internal Blu-ray drive

That is good if the 6x Sony is in the firmware.

If you do run into any media that can overspeed to 8x it would be great if you could let us know.

Thanks

From Google products/shopping around $300.

I think it's a bit too much for an internal, but hey.. it's 8x!
