Be forced once again?... When were we forced to buy new generation burners? CDR discs and CDR burners are still around, and it's still up to each one to jump in the DVDR bandwagon or not.

Besides, each time a new technology is popping up, we hear people claiming that the old one will disappear in a short time, which has never happened in actuality, correct me if I'm wrong.

http://www.dvdhs.com and http://www.dvdrwservices.com the two famous URLs on media packaging tell you a funny story about early DVD burners.

February 18, 2009 is the final cutoff date for all analog signals in North America.

http://news.com.com/Digital+TV+switc...3-6004429.html

People who are buying TVs, VCRs, and PVRs now will discover that they will not work after that date, without buying a separate digital tuner for each unit. That's not such a big deal for TVs, but off-the-air recording devices that rely on an integrated tuner likely won't work at all with the external tuner because the VCR/PVR won't be able to change the channel without a human being present. Remotes won't work either.

It's a cash grab for everybody - the cableco's get to charge you for each tuner unit, the government gets to sell off the now-vacant VHF and UHF frequency bandwidth, and the TV & recorder companies benefit from everybody dumping their old TVs and VCRs all at once.

A cash grab for everybody ... except the consumer.

And, as far as Blu-ray and HD-DVD blank media prices go, this media pricing of a buck per gigabyte isn't sustainable or even viable. For one thing, hard disc prices are currently less than half that. Optical needs to get much cheaper and quickly if it stands any chance of wide adoption.

DVDs offered a big improvement over pre-recorded VHS tapes, and an improvement that could be seen by anybody immediately (no rewinding, clearer picture, better sound, more durable/less delicate media). Blu-ray and HD-DVD appeal only to enthusiasts, and I think there's a lot of potential for these formats to utterly faceplant. Currently, the DRM in the two formats, the price of the player units, consumer confusion over the benefits, and the price of the media - all point to a very flat adoption curve.

Analog still seems to be going alive and strong, and I havent seen any of those free digital to analog converters that they promised they would provide to millions of people that had not changed over yet..... Given substantially more time, not even at of law could phase out a standard, if the public doesn't go along with it. I would like to see them even try to phase out dvd in 2 years. IT will never happen, not in 2 years, and probably not in 5 year.....
Digital broadcasts are going to happen. The public might be apathetic, but the broadcasters will have no choice and the public will have no choice but to go along because their analog receivers will pick up nothing but static. Commercial television stations will not be licenced to broadcast anything but digital signals. Game, set, and match.

Compare it to the memory cards and USB dongle business. Those things sure are overpriced, but people still buy them, because they need small, compact devices and not big bulky hard disks. They don't consider the price per gigabyte, but the price per item, and optical discs and flash drives will beat hard disks there, regardless of the price per gigabyte.

(It's hard disk, but compact disc. )

They still have new release movies on VHS in my neck of the woods. I guess some people still haven't switched to DVD's yet around here.

Probably yes, and so will Princo if there is money to be made.

Is it possible that Ritek and Princo BD-R(E) media will be considered the very best you can get, due to a freak crossover from a parallel universe?

Then again, perhaps not...

But mind you I still remember when RITEK made those CD-Rs they were once considered very decent !

What I'm even more afraid of is the declining quality of TY discs - I think i'll stick to DVD for as long as I can. Besides, BluRay is already obsolete, there are already talks about multi dimensional holographic media, 100 layers, no required cartridges, resistent to water, scratches and dust and can hold terrabytes of data - so I'll hold off on BluRay as well, for now

If you have a look at this page :
http://homepage2.nifty.com/yss/index.html
you can see that YSS bought a lot of Blu-Ray discs of different brands and types, tested several Blu-Ray burners
but he bought not a single HD-DVD media and tested no HD-DVD burner

So I like to have your opinion about this:
Why does YSS have no interest at all in the HD-DVD format ? Is it only a question of availability or
do japanese people already consider this format as dead regarding burning with a PC ?

Re: Blu-ray media is here

I think it's because there's only 1 HD DVD burner from Toshiba and it's not out in the market yet. I have some HD DVD-R media since 2006 but they are still wrapped not used and now it's almost 2008.

I think for us burning freaks, Blu-ray is more comfortable to play with. We can get a burner for around $300 and burning or backup a blu-ray is also very fun to do. The only *negative* compared to DVD is that we can't do quality scan on BD media yet. But definitely blu-ray backup is fun, at least for me.
