Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

BD can have various video & audioformats, its a labyrinth...

Try with PowerDVD and also WinDVD and you surely will experience differences.

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

Hi,
It stutters only on films with the newer codecs (avc?). The mpeg2 films play fine with very little cpu usage.

I want to figure out how to make these other films play. Will a different sata controller fix the problem?

Thanks.

it will only fix it if your transfed speed is slow. check with CD-DVD Speed what speed you are getting

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

What program should I use to test this speed?
I used Nero to check the burst and it was 7mb/s which seems very slow...

I'm thinking it might be the sata controller because when I play hd-dvd's with the xbox360 drive, the cpu usage is much slower and there are no problems...but with the lg unit, even some of the hd-dvd's have a stutter once and awhile.

If I have to get a new sata pci card, which one do you recommend?

Thanks.

BTW, where do I find the standard windows driver for the sata chipset. Windows wants to use the nvidia one always.

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

Hi,
Can someone have a look at my speed tests attached?

I need to know if the problem is with a bottleneck in the nvidia nforce4 chipset or is it my graphics card or processor.
This test looked like the nforce4 is not the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Looks good, could be media dependant.

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

Thanks for your help.

I'm pretty sure my problem is with my 8800GTS not having HD Purevideo so there is no onboard hardware HD-DVD/Bluray decodcing going on. Thus, it's relying on my 3800+ X2 CPU which just is not up to snuff.
I overclocked my CPU last night to 2.3Ghz (standard is 2Ghz) and I can get the 5th element movie to work without stutter now but the CPU temperature is very high.

Options are to replace my video card which would be my third on this rig(had another nvidia but it had no HDCP and anydvd would not bypass the HDCP issue) so I will probably go with a new motherboard/CPU with the existing 8800GTS and use the existing stuff to make a server computer or something...

Thanks again to everyone.

Are you sure? I think also the 8800xxx has PV enabled, the software/codec support counts.
Try with PowerDVD8 Ultra or WinDVD9.

My 8800 GT definitely has PV2 support. The thing rocks.

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

It seems like i am only getting 1x from the LG. When I try to rip a movie it takes 70-80min for a 30gig movie with speeds at about 5MBs. Can PIO be on instead of DMA? (I just thought about this and i am not at home to check). Movies playback fine I am running Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 mobo. Not sure what could be the problem otherwise. I am also running vista x86

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

Are you ripping to internal harddrive or external?

The drive usually starts around 5mb/s and it should speed up.

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

External Hard Drive under USB2, i will do some testing later today to see if it's the problem but i know i swear i have copied stuff to it at faster speeds. I have used both anydvd-hd ripper and just plain copy and pasting with windows and get the same speed. I could assume it's vista being slow but I really hope it's not (I have sp1 installed as well). If I got redundency errors or problems with the video that was copied i would think it's the drive but everything is copied perfectly

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

Ok, I tried again with copy and pasting and I am finally getting around 10-11MBs either because I did a mobo update or because the last time I tried copy and paste I might of been using a HD-DVD. Sadly, Anydvd is still giving me 5.4MBs on the same disc. I guess I should just try an ISO creator so I can have less chance of corruption.

Use ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 or later with AnyDVD enabled and you'll be good to go. Set it for read mode and it'll create the ISO you need.

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

I just added the LG GGC-H20L to a brand new Dell XPS 420 w Vista Ultimate and ATI HD 2400 Pro. I installed the bundled Cyberlink software including PowerDVD 7 Ultra.

The PowerDVD ultra 7 wont play Blu-ray or HDDVD movies - it asks for some critical component update. This then takes me to the Cyberlink website where it asks you to upgrade to version 8 for a cost of $89.

Am I missing a patch somewhere or is this a ripoff to make me pay $89 on top of the drive cost - the bundled software wont work as is?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Good luck! Cyberlink will refuse to support bundled software. So yes, it's a ripoff, but it should also be working for you. Any specific message it's giving you? Is your system fully HDCP compatible?

I almost fell out of my chair - here its July 4, I sent an email thru Cyberlink support - got a reply email back (probably from India) from them with the correct patch and now the drive's playing HD and BR - yay!
Happy 4th to all!

vajurewi, can you tell us which version is the patch? I would guess it's "CyberLink.3730d_Ultra_DVD080411-03.exe"?

they sent me this ftp link:

ftp://191:OAESXQC9@ftp.gocyberlink.c...D080624-01.exe

so if anyone else gets 'player needs update of critical components to play certain movies' for BR or HD DVD's thats where to go.

4102b, eh? Was there an update for the retail 7.3 that I missed while I was gone?? If not this'd be the first time I'm aware of that the OEM version is more up to date than the retail version. LOL.

Yeah that's odd, the 7.3 OEM gets upgraded to 4102b while the retail gets 3730d.

That's wrong, zevia. 7.3 retail has 4102. Or should I say....HAD. They seemed to have pulled ALL 7.3 patches from their site. At least the last time I checked.

Ah okay, I missed that patch then, SamuriHL.

But we don't need v7 anymore right?

Re: Blu-Ray / HDDVD LG GGC-H20L Combo Drive Issues

That depends, zev....how attached are you to your HD DVD collection? We've discovered ways of patching HD DVD support into PowerDVD 8, but, it ain't pretty and requires some files from 7.3 4102. 7.3 doesn't need to remain installed once you get the files you need, but, it's still not perfect. I currently only have 8 installed on my main HTPC. 8 sucks down too many resources for my second HTPC so I use 7 on there.
