blu-ray/hd-dvd question

How long until we start having blu-ray or hd-dvd drives installed in new PCs?

Will these drives be compatible w/current PCs? In other words, can they be installed in a current PC in the same way as a regular drive? Or do they differ in size, etc

Re: blu-ray/hd-dvd question

I think we'll see the first PC-drives in Q1 2006 and yes, they will have the same size and you will be able to install the drives in current PCs. See this Panasonic press release for more information

The hardware requirements of current computers should also be enough. The first drives will offer 2x BD recording which requires a transfer rate of app. 8.6 MB/s; 8x BD recording will require app. 34,3 MB/s. For comparison, a 16x DVD writer reaches app. 22 MB/s.
