haha there's a little part of me hoping that hd and blu-ray manage to kill one another off and dvd remains the standard...kind of like how laserdiscs sort of just faded away

I don't think we will have to many guinea pig's like when new media comes out

or you could spend:

$40 + $2.50 for a dvd burner and 6 SL's = 28.2GB
$40 + $8 for a dvd burner and 4 DL's = 31.8GB
$50 for an 80GB HDD

and you'd be able to share that data with more than the 3 other people who have BR drives

No, I posted this ironically/satirically, I thought this is such a waste of money.
1. No protected content at all can be recorded- which kills off 95% of the legitimate media out there available for archiving.
2. It may be a backup solution for someone's network- but a separate offsite server with RAID would probably be cheaper. And you would have the option of adding hundreds of GB's of storage to it.
3. Where are you going to play it? I doubt if the PS3 will allow home burned disks to be played in it. The Bluray players will have content protection as well.
I know! I could burn 1000 copies of Paris Hilton's new music video and watch it on my computer!

I'm waiting until the hybrid HD-DVD/Blury drives come out. Since Toshiba & Sony won't cross-license their crap it'll probably never happen.

I just received my new (very expensive) mini Blueray writer from Tiawan. Great I had downloaded several Blueray movies!!!! only they are not anymore. So I used Nero and wrote 15 movies to a Blueray disc. Plays fine on my computer. My Blueray player doesn't want to know. My HD Player doesn't want to know.......So is there really any point to a Blueray writer, if you can't download Blueray what can you write to Blueray????

redcap007 please read forum rules, we do not allow talk about pirating movies or whatever. If you are wondering what to do with your burner, then i suppose you could have given it some more thought before actually buying it.

Well burning software is legal. Since you are trully wondering what to do with your burner, well usually they are used for things like:

1. Backing up your data
2. Backing up your original blu-rays
3. Creating your blu-rays from your HD cameras etc
