Blu-ray burner for data only, specs?

I was going to search this section for "data", but decided against it since it is too generic a term.
I'm wanting to purchase a Blu-ray burner so I can archive a collection of files that currently occupy 20 DVD's
I'm looking to get either a GGW-H20L or the Panasonic SW-5582
Does my 3 year old PC need to be up to any certain specs just to burn data BD discs?
I enclosed a screenshot of Cyberlink advisor.
My Sata controller is listed as:
IDE Controller : Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) EIDE Controller
IDE Controller : Intel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller

Thank you,
Jon

Cheaper, by far, to get a hard drive for such a job. The burner alone costs more than a hard drive, and that's without any BD media to burn. There's also a cogent argument that a hard drive will be more reliable.

Re: Blu-ray burner for data only, specs?

(Minimum) system requirement for the Panasonic SW-5582: Pentium III 700Mhz, and an IDE connection.

Meanwhile for the LG GGW-H20L, for Blu-ray burning and playback: Pentium D (Dual Core) 3.2Ghz or equivalent (Recommended Pentium Core 2 Duo E6300 and higher).

So unfortunately, according to LG your Pentium IV 3Ghz is underspecs. [Although I would think that your system is fine for 2x Blu-ray burning using the LG)

True, for average person it is economically cheaper to get a harddrive or USB 2.0 external harddrives but for some people/business/research groups they prefer optical media for their data archives so that they can label and store them in archive racks accordingly.

I still use harddrives for my data archives because it's cheaper and have faster access time but I also have some of my data in BD-RE media. I guess if the burners and media are cheap enough we will see more need for Blu-ray archive solutions.

Even for data only, this computer is outdated.

Re: Blu-ray burner for data only, specs?

I have an Intel D865GLC board and the literature says it supports 3.2 GHZ and 3.4 GHZ processors.
Also I already have the "correct" SATA port, according to other posts here.
IDE Controller : Intel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller

If I upgrade my processor, this PC "should" be capable of burning Blu-ray data discs, shouldn't it?

I know I would need a new video card and monitor to use this PC for watching and burning movies, but that isn't what I asked my original question for.

PC specs:
Intel D865GLC motherboard (The literature describes it as supporting 800 MHZ system bus)
3.0 GHZ pentium 4
1 GB RAM (I can always upgrade to 2 or 4 GB)

Re: Blu-ray burner for data only, specs?

I don't think it's worth upgrading the processor from 3.00 Ghz to 3.40 Ghz. You won't gain much for nearly $100 upgrade price. Also the specs for GGW-H20L says minimum 3.2 Ghz *Dual Core* and your motherboard support only single cores socket 478 (Pentium 4 or Celeron D).

I think it's better if you try it out. I've tried playback Blu-ray on a 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 before and it works fine. I would believe that you will have no problem burning blu-ray disc as long as you limit it no higher than 2x speed.
