| Blu-Ray I don't think I would be updating to this stuff cause people just started getting into DVD's, and I think it is too soon to do this stuff, but a question about Blu-Ray, is it true that Blue-Ray is gonna have something to protect the bottom of the disc from scratches and dirt? |

| Re: Blu-Ray Yes, it's a 0.1 mm hard coat developed by TDK and it makes the disc more resistant against scratches and fingerprints. Without the use of this protective layer, Blu-ray would require a cartridge.

| Re: Blu-Ray Although the protection layer seems unusually thin, apparently the technology TDK will be using claims to be 100 x more scratch-resistant than the standard coating used on existing DVD's. It's also suppose to be very risistant to finger prints also. Then again, while TDK's Durabis technology may be very risistant to sratches and finger prints, it wil lbe interesting to see how resistant the disc is warps and dents. The following article gives some detail on the TDK's Durabis technology for Blu-ray: http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/11175

| Re: Blu-Ray The Durabis predecessor ScratchProof is used on DVD since 2002 and Durabis should be more resistant. ![]() Digitimes tested the coating back in November and the disc played well

| Re: Blu-Ray Don't forget that the real message behind the coating is that BD will be highly sensitive to any dust or smudges of any kind, scratches included. Stuff that you get by with on a DVD will not be acceptable to BD. With a lower data density, HD-DVD will not have as many issues. Being the local BD curmudgeon, I just wanted to point out again that BD has several issues that have yet to be worked out, and playback issues are but one. Coatings sound all fine and good, but the bottom line is difficult playback with anything but a pristine disc. |

| Re: Blu-Ray I have never seen a TDK 100x proof DVD disc myself. Anything that makes manufacturing process more complex will lead to more $ to end users. However, it will surely make Blu-ray cheaper by removing cartdriges to compete better against HD-DVD (not that it will cost less to produce Blu-ray with TDK coating than HD-DVD.)

| Re: Blu-Ray It depends on who you are. For me, I wanted to have many of my friends, associates, collegues, family, and even forum co-members to have DVD-RAM writer drives in the late 1990s. I didn't buy any VHS-only player or recorder but just leapt to CD (Audio CD, Video CD, CD-R, CD-RW...) Some of us bought first DVD writers in 2001 or 2002 or before 2001. Some others between 2003 and 2004. Still the rest of CDFreaks visitors bought their first DVD burners in 2005. There must be even those who don't even have a CD writer yet.
