Blu Burner or Standard ?

Greetings CDfreaks member,

I'm policeman, i've been lurking here reading for a atleast a few years now. I've learned alot. I've been backing up my stuff for a long time now. I've used and still use some, DVDShrink, Autogk, Handbrake, Super, DVDFab, imgburn, etc.

Now i've hit a wall. My wife bought me a cheap (use this term loosely) HD camcorder for fathers day. The very expensive Aiptek ActionHD. It takes great daytime video and pretty good photos if you have a steady hand, no image stabilization is a drawback and the night mode is not that good, anyways.....

Aiptek video records in .mov files. I've figured out this is a quicktime format (i think). Here's the problem, I can't edit them w/ windows movie maker in .mov format. I have to convert them to avi files and loose quality. I'm not wanting to do this. I want to edit then burn them to a standard dvd, which i can't figure out how to do or if it's even possible.

So the reason i'm in this particular part of the forum is that i'm considering buying an blu-ray burner, in particular the LG GGCH20L, it's a little high would like to spend $250.00 or less though.

Will I be able to "drag and drop" the .mov files onto a blank blu-ray disc with say imgburn or nero? Will the included software (cyberlink?) allow me to edit the .mov files like movie maker?
* Will the blu burner allow me to burn .mov or any hd video to a standard dvd? And if so do standard dvd players read hd video off of standard 4.7 dvds? You know since the media is on a standard disc?

Since blu burners have been out a while now, how's the "back up" software for you personal purchased blu-rays? Easy two step methods like dvdfab to shrink (imgburn)?

Could I convert the .mov files to another HD format and then burn them to blu or standard?

And lastly, what's the cheapest blu burner?

Thanks and sorry for all the questions, but there all somewhat related....

Check the Slysoft forum as more people will chime in. When you find the answer post it here also. I am considering buying a 1080P video cam and will want to do the same thing. I noticed they are coming these days with no moving parts and a mem stick.

Aslo, I have seen posts on other forums about people trying to find software that will do this for a fair price.

I saw this at Walmart a while ago. Pretty slick.

In case you haven't search, this is the Aiptek website.

Your video is saved in MOV H.264 format.
I don't think Movie Maker will do it. You need to install the Cyberlink Power Director Pro that came with the package.

Not sure what's the difference between Power Director Pro and the Ultra or Deluxe but I'm sure the Pro can process your video to DVD or perhaps Blu-ray. Here is Cyberlink Power Director website:http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_4_ENU.html

GGC-H20L is only Blu-ray reader. If you want blu-ray burner you want the GGW-H20L or wait for the new GBW-H20L. You can get GGW-H20L for around $250. It will burn to blu-ray disc as well to DVD discs.

You will be able to use the included software Cyberlink Power Director to edit the .mov file. You can also use other softwares such as Ulead Video Studio, Pinnacle Studio etc.

Blu-ray burner will burn to a blu-ray disc or DVD discs. However playback HD video is different thing.

Lets say that you processed (with software) your HD video as blu-ray structure and burn it to a DVD disc as the medium. You can playback on your blu-ray burner/reader, dvd burner/reader, standalone blu-ray player or PS3. You cannot play it on your standalone dvd player. But if you burn it on a blu-ray disc, you can only playback on blu-ray burner/reader, standalone blu-ray player or PS3. You cannot play blu-ray disc from dvd burner/reader/player.

If you want your standalone DVD player to playback your video, you will need to process as DVD-Video, which will reduce the video quality.

It depends on the blu-ray movie. If the movie is in 25GB disc, then it will be an easy process, eq rip to harddrive and burn to BD-R/RE 25GB using imgburn. If the movie is in dual layer 50GB and you want to shrink to 25GB disc, then the process will be longer. There's no easy shrinking software that can maintain the menu yet. Current option is to take only the main movie (without menu) and include only an audio stream your choice to be able to fit into a single layer 25GB disc.

LG GGW-H20L is actually the cheapest (around $250).

Gotcha, I had assumed what you said, but wasn't sure.

Steve, I read from the aiptek.com website (link in my post above) that Aiptek Action HD camcorder comes with Cyberlink Power Director Pro. Maybe you can check the CD software in the box?

I was looking for the new GBW-H20L hoping it will be less pricey than current LGs, but couldn't find it everywhere. Where did you see in amazon/newegg or other sites? Links? Thanks.

Mine came w/ "total media extreme", which doesn't recognize the .mov file either. You know, I know what codecs are, containers, etc. (for the most part), but I can't find a codec on the install cd....go figure. I'll check the Aiptek website and see what they have. I might need a firmware update on the camera, who knows. One would assume that the packed in software was for the camera!?

$265. plus shipping.....
http://search.live.com/cashback/prod...4035/11479905# If you go thru the "microsoft live" search cashback program, I think this is the cheapest, $252.00 AFTER $13.00 cash back, which you get in 60 days. Plus $8.00 shipping from "thenerds.net'.

$270. plus shipping.....

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...rticculturf-20 This one from Amazon is actually from there "marketplace", not directly from them, so I wouldn't bother.

The one on Newegg is $299.99, too much. I'm going to check bestbuy, I've got some rewardzone pts. to burn, hopefully I'll have some luck.

Haven't found it less than $250.00 yet, unless you've got luck w/ ebay, seen them cheaper on there.

Re: Blu Burner or Standard ?

I'm not sure if it's two different models (which i think it is), but some sites, bestbuy for ex have the model number as "GBW-H20LI", others like amazon or newegg have it listed as "GGW..."

Re: Blu Burner or Standard ?

Steve, the GGW-H20L supports reading HD DVD while the new GBW-H20L does not.

Btw, if you look closely in Aiptek website (support section), you can find some Cyberlink software keys so I thought it should be in the included CD.

Here's the link (scroll down): http://www.aiptek.com/support.htm

But I think I misread. If you said that you don't have Cyberlink in the CD software, then probably Cyberlink Power Director Pro is for other hardware and not for your Aiptek Action HD. Not sure why they posted software and serial there, strange. Anyway sorry about that, Steve.

Do you have other programs to edit your H264 mov video, such as Ulead, Pinnacle, Adobe, or Quicktime etc?

No, nothing. I found a video of Vimeo by a fellow named Peter Gomberg, using his Aiptek action HD. Has some slo-mo of his daughter (i think), very cool. Upon reading comments, he talks about a plugin and a filter for virtual dub, going to try that. Never messed w/ VD before, I'll see.

A buddy of mine has a copy of Sony Vegas, he's never used or activated, says he's going to give it to me. Hope so. Other than those two prospects, I may just have to break down and buy (gasp!) some software, can't remember the last time i did that.

thanks,
Steve
