Re: Backup your Blu-ray movies: a guide to BackupBluray

I've now done several movies with VC-1 and it ends up that it is because it is using that special codec. If anyone knows what program can play VC-1 files, that would be great.

- a very powerfull and expensive hardware
- an expensive transcoding software in order to transcode the video files in a reasonable amount of time ?
- which is the software to use for authoring: in order to prepare the files to be burned with Nero or Imgburn on a BD-R ?

I know that:
- BD-R discs are still very expensive compared to 4 or 5 blank blank DVD's
- there is going to be a big waste of capacity unless you are able to put several DVD-video on a BD-R disc
- you have to buy a still very expensive Blu-Ray standalone player
- and at the end you have a loss int the video resolution (only maybe a bad upscaling ?)

But I am only concerned about the reliabilty (lifespan) of burned BR-R discs
because they do not use an organic dye but 2 metallic layers

Thanks for listening to this idea ...
I have done this. The easiest way is to create a super huge DVD in whatever program you want, then export it to HDD, then just burn those files to Blu-ray using the burn data option in whatever program you use.

Really?
BD movies are over €30 here, and a BD disc is available from €10...........

Yes if you burn it to a blank BD disc it will be the same video quality since it does not compress anything.

Re: Backup your Blu-ray movies: a guide to BackupBluray

good guide, but the blank disc costs more than movies here. Time to time blu-ray movies go on sale for less than $15. Buy 2 if is that price, save time, save money, and no wear and tear on your computer since using the 2nd one as a backup. By the time the blank media become cheap and drives are cheap, then we will prolly see newer software like blu-ray decrypter with automatic key code finder etc...

Can't argue with that. Even at early stage, a blu-ray movie cost $29.99 and a blank media was $25. This guide is using the first utility that was released almost a year ago, BackupBluray, that breaks the protection. Nowdays you can use other free utility such as DVDFabHD or not free AnyDVD HD. In anycase it's good if you want to rip those HiDef movies to your 1TB harddrive for archive or easy access.

Re: Backup your Blu-ray movies: a guide to BackupBluray

I attempted following the instructions given for recording the BDMV folder to a BD-R yesterday for play back in a stand-alone Blu-ray disc player. I am using Nero 8. When I go and try to put the BDMV folder in nero 8 (I even tried ImgBurn) it will not accept the folder. I followed the instructions on putting the image on my hard drive. What am I doing wrong? Can some one type a brief step-by-step on how to follow this process using Nero? Thank you.

Re: Backup your Blu-ray movies: a guide to BackupBluray

I haven't tried with Nero 8 yet, but in ImgBurn, did you select Mode > Build and drag the folders to ImgBurn window?

Re: Backup your Blu-ray movies: a guide to BackupBluray

Yes I attempted exactly that. When I attempt to drag the newly created "BDMV" file from the hard drive it first tells me on the right side of the imgburn window that the files are "unknown". Then I click on calculate and an error message is returned stating the following.

Cannot add file to image1

Name: C:\Desktop\BDMV\STREAM\00024.m2ts
Size: 8,150,507,520 bytes

ISO9660 Limit: 4,294,967,295 bytes

Reason: File size exceeds the limit imposed by the ISO9660 file system.

What do you make of that? Am I using an previous version of ImgBurn perhaps? If so, which version do I require.? Thanks.

Re: Backup your Blu-ray movies: a guide to BackupBluray

Ok, good that you detailed the error message, ISSO9660 has a limit so you need to change the file system to UDF. Here is the fix:

While in Build mode, on the right window, click the Option tab. In the File System, choose UDF from the dropdown selection.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: Backup your Blu-ray movies: a guide to BackupBluray

Once I switched the program to UDF everything loaded just fine in ImgBurn. The program copied the image rather quickly to a BD-R(I acquired one of these discs at no charge). It took only 54 minutes to copy almost 24 GB to the BD-R disc. When I attempted to play the disc in my LG super blu(blu-ray, hd dvd combo) stand-alone, it gave me disc error. In an attempt to rescue the disc from being a coaster....is this disc not playing because ImgBurn does not finalize it properly for play in a stand-alone. If so...how do you finalize this type of disc. I have seen this error given in regular dvd players because discs were not finalized properly. Otherwise, I followed the instructions posted above explicitly and it isn't working the way I need it to work. Let me know. As added information.....I have noticed that when I put the BD-R in the BD-R unit on the computer and click on the appropriate drive, I get the BDMV folder showing up. Within this folder are the following folders: BACKUP, CLIPINF, PLAYLIST, SREAM. Right beneath these are:
index.bdmv and MovieObject.bdmv. This may provide a clue to anyone who knows more about why it is not working.

Re: Backup your Blu-ray movies: a guide to BackupBluray

Which model player(stand-alone) do you use? I don't understand how it would make a difference? The LG super blu is the best player out there right now(mainly for it's ability to play both HD DVD and Blu Ray discs). If the image that is copied to the blank BD-R disc is exactly the same as it is on the original BD-R disc(which plays perfectly by the way), then why is the copied image giving an error on the created disc? Thank you.
