Archival uses for blu-ray and hd-dvd

The first blu-ray and hd-dvd burners are coming to market and the initial reviews reel off every spec except the one I'm most interested in: how long will these discs last? AFAIK current recordable dvd's can degrade in as little as 2 to 5 years. Does anyone know if the next gen media lasts any longer?

Re: Archival uses for blu-ray and hd-dvd

Given the complexities of the BD format and the density of the data, I wouldn't assume that they have any use whatsoever for "archiving". HD-DVD has a very slightly better chance, but still not worth betting on.

Bottom line is that no recordable optical media is appropriate for "archiving". But the truth will not be known for another 20 years or so.

From what I've gleaned on the internet, some financial, medical and law enforcement institutions are using DVD-RAM.

That's quite a statement since Sony has been promoting PDD (no longer being developed but has been in use for about 2 or 3 years), a blue laser high density format, for professional data archiving for years.
