Don't you need a HDCP-compliant PC monitor to go with that HDCP video display card? Everything I've read so far about the new HDV DRM measures state everything from the player to the monitor must be HDCP-complient.

Yes! If you're running a digital output the monitor/display must also be HDCP enabled.

Ah good point on the HDCP.
It's probably going to be a long wait before we have DRM solutions.
I bet we'll see $100 internal HD-DVD readers by the end of 2007.

Re: $160 Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive now working with PCs

According to iSupply, the BD-ROM drive in the Sony Playstation 3 costs $125 to manufacture, and it has some functionality thrown into it that's basically unrelated to BD-ROM use.

It's annoying to know that the market exists but the products aren't being sold. I'm having a hard time getting jazzed up about paying $700 for a Blu-Ray burner when I'm too cheap to buy writable Blu-Ray discs. A $150 read-only device would be fine for a few years!

(And yeah, I have a HDCP compliant display and video card already.)

Re: $160 Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive now working with PCs

I was under the impression that HDCP compliance is not required, yet. I think it'll be a couple of years until compliance will be mandatory to play anything at full resolution.

It should be interesting because my projector is hdcp compliant but my crt isnt, so Im expecting the projector to be able to display at full res, while my monitor while down convert.

Personally though, I think the hdcp on pcs will be cracked very very quickly, allowing us to view hd material at full res on pretty much any display providing it is capable of scaling to those high resolutions.

You can view HD content through an analogue source such as VGA (D-SUB)

If you connect via hdmi or dvi and either the gfx card or monitor are not HD compliant then it wont work.

I have my media centre pc hooked up with an Asus 7600GT via HDMI to my Panasonic 42" plasma. It all works fine, picture is amasing

You don't have to worry about HDCP any more AnyDVD HD removes all the DRM from HD-DVD and everything except the region from BluRay.

What if you use your existing video card and buy a dvi-hdmi cable? Its what Ive done. You may find this works just as well and costs far less.

But HDMI is "better", because no extra audio quirk is necessary.
And don't underestimate the HDCP handshake and SYNC problems.

I agree completely. Theres a growing choice of Bluray and HD titles available in my local stores...and at good prices. However the cost of readers (both standalone and PC based) are extreme.

So which software do I need to play HD-DVDs with MS's Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive connected to my XP machine?
