Why do enclosures have Max Capacities?

I've noticed that a lot of external hard drive enclosures have capacities (ie "supports up to 500gb HD". Since they are all the same size physically, why does it matter?

If I put a 750gb HD in an enclosure that only "supports up to 500gb", will it work? Will I break the HD and/or enclosure?

I appreciate any help on this subject

Re: Why do enclosures have Max Capacities?

I guess it's just the largest hard drive size that was used for testing.
Usually it should not be problematic to use a larger hard drive, but it could be a problem in some cases if the controller has bugs or doesn't support it properly.

Re: Why do enclosures have Max Capacities?

That is the limitation that enclosure circuitry has for the maximum transfer rate. The cheater the enclosure the cheater the circuitry and the lower of the transfer rate are.
