Hard Drive Discuss, New hard drive isn't there! at International Chat: Hardware related forum; I have just installed a brand new Western Digital 160gb hard drive. When I boot the computer up or got into the BIOS it shows that it has been recognised. Once Windows has finished loading it's not under My Computer, Windows Explorer or anywhere else I've looked.

Re: New hard drive isn't there!

what OS and what are your system's spec's?

is this a single hard drive system or was this hard drive added?

if it is a second added hard drive check the jumpers to make sure that one har drive is master and the other is slave.

if it is a single hard drive setup and there is nothing on the IDE ribbon with the drive. I would suggest removing the jumper altogether. I have installed several of the newer WD drives in system's lately and found that they usually dont like being jumpered if they are the only drive.

Re: New hard drive isn't there!

It's a second hard drive and it is set to slave. The main drive is a 40gb and is set to master. It comes up in the BIOS as slave and it's in the device manager, but not in My Computer.

Re: New hard drive isn't there!

In XP it's:

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management

Right click the new drive and select format.
