I heard about that before... hdd's with a built-in convertor, or controllers with a built-in converter.

Conclusion: fake and marketing. Nice for the save of space, but not worth the money. If true ofcourse...

200 USD even for the latest 120GB Maxtor 7,200-RPM HDD with 8MB buffer memory sounds too expensive to me, but it is Tokyo where computer hardware products except DVD writers are generally more expensive than Pricewatch. They usually sell a small quantity of CPU, HDD, ODD, and other new products for premium price and later reduce it to a more acceptable level when they become more widely available. I expect SATA 80GB 8MB HDD to be around 100 USD and SATA 120GB 8MB HDD to be around 150 USD when they arrive at many US retail stores in the next few weeks.

I'll begin to buy Serial ATA HDDs and ODDs after I have some motherboards with Intel's ICH5 or similarly-featured chipsets from VIA, SiS, ALi, or even NVidia.

yes

maxtor dont have a real serial ata HD yet.
but they are working on it. expect to be ready in the near future

as it looks now seagate will be the first manufacturer to come with a real serial ata HD for the public market.

There are Fujitsu and Samsung, too. But I doubt they will affect the enthusiast and high-end markets seriously.

nice pic

to bad you cant see the other side (bottom)
now you cant see if it is a real serial ata or just a adapter revision.

but seagate is most likely to bring out the first serial ata hd's
so is pic looks more real for me then the maxtor one.

Seagate S-ATA 120GB 8MB a little cheaper than Maxtor's P-ATA 120GB 8MB in South Korea. Much cheaper than WD 1200JB.

Easy to compare cost per MB and features here.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y120M0 (Serial ATA 150) 120GB 25,000 Yen ($208)
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y120P0 (Parallel ATA 133) 120GB 18,400 Yen ($153)
