Re: magnets affecting hard drives

Ask you computer teacher if he knows about the magnet "inside" of the hard drive itself.

A magnet will affect your hard drive...but such a magnet would have to be exceptionally powerful. Powerful enough that it would do you physical harm if you were in the vicinity.

The absolute answer is "YES" a magnet can harm you HDD....howerver you will most likely never have the option of being anywhere near a device of that magnitude.

Re: magnets affecting hard drives

I've been told many times to keep magnets away from electronic devices, e.g. computers. Anyway, I'm usually pretty cautious about it, I don't use the screwdrivers with magnetic tips. Anyway, as far as damaging it goes, jmike314 is probably right. But erasing it might only take a litte bit of magnetice power. So, as a rule, I would keep them away from computers.
