i am giveing my computer away , and i wanted to know how i delete all data files on my hard drive. i will be formatting it, but even when i format it i was told personal data is still present. what can i do? is there a free program i can use?

I'm sure there are freebies out there but take a look at secureclean. You can try the demo and that might meet your needs.

Zero fill / low level format should be sufficient, unless you're giving it to a forensic data specialist. You can download a bootable diagnostics/tools floppy from the website of your hard drive manufacturer for this.

Best solution is to keep the HDD. A full wipe can take many hours. If you're giving the PC to relatives, then a quick format of the HDD should be okay.
