hear clicking sound, but little bit confused

I have Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 hard drive in my laptop. If turned on and logged onto windows, the regular clicking sound can be heard. Searched on Hitachi website and understood that this may be a head damage. i've read the symptoms and there was written that clicking sound starts immediately if turned on. But my HDD only spins after turning on and no clicking nor any other weird sounds is generated. Regular clicking starts when log onto windows. I did TRT test, this was good, and there wasn't any clicking during the test. Should I worry?

I would back up everything you can . I think your drive is about to fail . This happened to my laptop before . I think it was a Hitachi drive too.

Re: hear clicking sound, but little bit confused

"Clicking" is perfectly normal, it's a question of degrees. All HD's make noise when accessing/writing data. The "click of death" that many people refer to is actually a much louder sound, more of a "clack", and if usually accompanied by a brief system freeze. That said, if the drive previously made no such noises, but now does, it is certainly suspect.

There are many fine HD diagnostic tools available, mostly from the drive makers themselves. If a drive passes these tests, it can be considered healthy. If the drive came with a disc, the tools may be on that disc.

This is the benchmark of my HDD. Seems nice. I had never experienced any momentary system freezes and during this test there was no any clickcing sound heard.

Can't agree on that.

My lappy with 80GB WD HDD also makes these "clicking" sounds from time to time. IIRC this has been going on since new install of drive, more then 1 year back.

@Hannez, almost any HDD manufacturer has some kind of diagnostic tools (WD's is named Data Lifeguard Tools) you might try that instead of HDTune.

BTW, any HDD can die out of a sudden, so you better continuously backup all your precious data.

Re: hear clicking sound, but little bit confused

Well the general assumption is that once those clicking sounds occur and your PC begins to momentarily lock up, it's time to say goodbye to your HDD.
