Please can anyone tell me how to change the firmware of my segate barakuda 40GB drive. will this repair my bad sectors.

Bad sectors are a physical problem and cannot be fixed by any method.

If you have bad sectors, you should replace the drive. Firmware will not help it. Run the Seagate diagnostic program to confirm you have a problem. Once you see bad sectors, the chances are good that problems will get progressively worse.

You can although in some cases remap bad sectors by using hdd utiliy supplied by the manufactorer.
