Sata HD via usb just "USB DEVICE" in winxp

i have this HD

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...D&locale=en-US

now i put it into a external case and connected it via usb. i have done this with my other 3 internal sata HDs as well before - never a problem - but now with this HD it just says : USB DEVICE and will not get recognized as a HD in windows.

any ideas why?

have written to seagate but they couldn't help me since it was only intended for internal use.

Well firstly your link shows an IDE or SATA HDD.
IDE:
Which should be no problem in itself.
SATA:
So maybe the caddy isn't working correctly. Incompatible, perhaps.
Though unlikely. If it has the correct connections.
Should show up as USB Mass Storage Device.
Via MY Computer should be seen along side other HDD's.
Check to see if there are any f/w updates for caddy etc.

It's an IDE (PATA) HDD n you have it in a SATA - USB External Enclosure....Enclosure must be either a SATA/USB for SATA, OR a SATA/IDE/USB for all, or just a IDE enclosure with USB conection...

YEP! Your Hard Disc is a SATA but what about your External Case..I reckon that case is an IDE/USB.
Please check it out...If it is, that be the reason it won't work.
