new GPU client released [now Nvidia too]

the new GPU folding client is now in public beta and supports ATI 2xxx and 3xxx cards (still no nvidia support )

its still not on the download page but there is a link to dl it and a FAQ in this thread:
http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.ph...st=0&sk=t&sd=a

it is much more CPU dependent than the previous client, but PPD numbers are more impressive as well

EDIT: I just skimmed through the faq and the new GPU client still only uses one CPU core per GPU so it is still possible to run an additional CPU client on a dual core or an SMP client on a quad core

Re: new GPU client released

well the original GPU client has been officially discontinued (no more x1xxx series) but the new GPU2 client is going strong with 2xxx, 3xxx, and the upcoming 4xxx series cards and is far more reliable and faster than the previous client. Also support for nvidia 8xxx and up will be added in the next few days.

EDIT: woohoo, nvidia client is out today!!!

Re: new GPU client released

Yowzers, I'm getting ~4,233 PPD out of my 8800gt

I know there are lots of CD Freaks with 8 and 9 series cards, and the the next gen 4xxx and 2xx cards are starting to show up too, so join in and lets see what these beasts can do

Re: new GPU client released [now Nvidia too]

And I had to go and get a 7800 card.

Oh well another reason to get a newer GTX 280 card.

Now to find the money.

Cheapest I've seen is AU$749 or there abouts.

They are also meant to be BIG and VERY HOT.

Re: new GPU client released [now Nvidia too]

ATI 48xx series seems to have caught up with NV in a lot of ways, 4850 beating an 8800GTX and the 4870 beating the NV 260. Half the price too.

I wonder how it folds with the GPU client?

I'd imagine the 4870 will do better than the 4850 with twice the memory bandwidth (GDDR5 vs. GDDR3) and potential for considerably higher clockspeeds, especially after voltmods and better cooling. Regardless, I'm looking forward to the 4870X2 in August (anyone care to buy it as a birthday present for me?).

Hooked up my 8500 GT last night .
Looks to be taking about 22 minutes per 1 percent , approx 36 hours to finnish, also running 2 WCG and 1 FAH V6 Beta CPU (x86) client.

I guess a big differance between 8500 GT and 8800 GT.

Looking at an ATI for my quad

Re: new GPU client released [now Nvidia too]

Installed GPU client on work computer with a 8600 GT board

Running 12 min per 1 % with only 1 WCG running also.

Can't wait to see the points on these.

Re: new GPU client released [now Nvidia too]

cool! from what I've seen over at the folding forums the 8500gt should be good for about 700ppd and the 8600gt should do about 1500ppd

I've been trying to find a super cheap (used) 8 series (even the 8400gs does 500ppd) to finish my uber cheap folding box... so far I have:

450w psu from my last build
6 year old 80gb hdd from my old gateway
asus 939 board that came free with a combo
939 sempron $0.99 shipped (ebay)
512mb ddr333 $0.99 shipped (ebay)
vista basic license from my laptop (put xp on the lappy)

so basically I have $2 invested so far... plus some parts I've been too lazy to sell
I think I'm addicted...some one needs to start FAH anonymous

I guess I am not getting the right jobs then, I have only gotten 480 for each of the 3 done so far with GPU.

I get about 4800ppd on my 8800GT. 1500 on my Quadro FX 1600M. Got a 9500 GT coming soon for another PC, I haven't seen any ppd ratings on that one.

Juggernaut looks like you and jwill427 are doing a GPU WU every 3 hours or less, my 8600gt take's about 13 hours per WU. and the 8500GT takes about 15 hours per WU

I must have something set up wrong, hope to find some time soon to do some more reading and figure out what setting I have wrong.

Tiger Direct had some 8500 and 8600's pretty cheap that should work out okay.

The 8800GT takes a bit over 2 hours for each WU, it's a beast. The 9500GT is around 1600PPD in limited testing.

Re: new GPU client released [now Nvidia too]

Does anyone know how much better if any is the DDR3 Ram over the DDR2 for running the GPU ,
Been looking at upgrading another card on my other box but have a very tight budget right now.Looks like I can get a 9500 GT DDR2 or a 8600 GTS DDR3 at about the same price thru Tiger Direct.
Does it make a big differance running the GPU with a 256 Ram card vs a 512 Ram ? I heard somewhere there was a bottlenck and the 512 is restricted .

Any sugestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

AFAIK memory speed doesn't have any effect on folding, and all the current WUs top out at about 40-50mb of vram, but future WUs will likely use more ram and 256mb might become a bottleneck. the biggest factor in folding speed is the number of stream processors and their clockspeed. both cards have 32 SPs but the 9500gt is on a 65nm process vs 80nm for the 8600 so the 9500 will likely overclock higher and use less power, but ddr2 will kill gaming performance if thats important to you. I'm not sure what kind of budget you're looking at but tiger direct has a 384mb 8800gs for $70 after rebate which will slaughter the 8600 and 9500 at folding (96 SPs) and gaming

Re: new GPU client released [now Nvidia too]

jwill427

Thanks for the info, very much appreciated.

The 384 is within my budget and at 3 times the stream processors that sounds like a good buy to me.

Not into gaming don't have time for it.

Most onboard video now days cover what I need ,just thought I could do a little extra Folding with a better card on my home machine.

Thanks Again for the pointers
