yeah ubuntu doesn't use a straight 100%. It bounces around from 90% to 100% all the time. I'll reload TAT and see if it helps. I was thinking about doing that earlier.

Yep, I'll give it a go when I get my C2D...not at the moment I think, I've been told it'll probably slow my poor PC down.

I think you will like Ubuntu when you can get everything you need to run it. I thought your high end single core would handle it with no slow downs sorry.

I need to nose around and see what MP3 and vid players to get for it and start setting it up to use more. I like the VM though but until i actually get to know it better i'll make a dual boot.

And thanks Like Dee said it's not really that hard. I'm just an average windoze user and HAD problems

It's a low-end dual core

Re: Folding with Linux SMP under VMware

I'm glad you got it all up and running Rolling.
VMWare is great for F@H and some other things for testing out a Linux distro. But it's very limited for other things such as DVD Burning. If you really want to try Linux out, you will need to install it on a partition or hard drive (without using VMWare) using it as a primary OS, perhaps dual boot with XP.

You should already have an MP3 player, it will prompt you to download a codec if required.

yeah i understand about loading it for a dual boot but like i said i need to get more familiar with it. If you dual boot you are either or in the OS choice correct? In other words if i boot to Linux i will be in Linux and visa versa correct? I like using both at the same time.

If i plug in my MP3 external personal player can i get MP3's off of it and play them or using a USB thumb drive to transfer MP3 to the drive and play with Linux MP3 player with VMware? Or do i need to install it on a HDD to do that?

Connecting an MP3 player in Linux works, dunno about in VMWare. Just plug it in and try it.

I cannot figure it out at this time. I'll play around with it sometime with VMware. Thank you again for your time.

Re: Folding with Linux SMP under VMware

VMWare + Ubuntu Guide
For 64bit Operating System and Dual Core CPU - Tweak as needed

1 - Download VMWare from here http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ and get a serial number
2 - Download Ubunto desktop from here http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUb...currentrelease

Make sure you download the correct version for your hardware, its a big download so make sure!!

You will need the 64bit version: 64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop CD

Burn the ISO to a CD.

3 - Install VMWare

4 - Load VMWare and create a new virtual machine (wizard), select "other" option and select "other 64bit" from the drop down.

Select all of the default options, but make sure you select 2 processors

Select the right amount of disk/memory for your machine. I use about 1Gb Ram 4Gb HD.

On the "network type" screen, i have been selecting "NAT" option, as it saves messing about with network settings, and just bridges your windows internet connection......
5 - Put your previously burnt CD in the drive and "start virtual machine"

VMWare will start and hopefully boot off of the CD, you might need to restart the virtual machine again, so that it notices the cd.

Once ubunto loads, try to surf the net, if that works you are ready to install.

6 - Run the Ubunto installer.....i just pick all of the default settings, you are running within a virtual machine, so it wont mess with your windows install whatever you pick.

Install away and reboot the virtual machine on completition (not the whole machine!).....take out the cd or you will boot from there again.

7 - Restart the virtual machine (should be a lot quick now its running off of a hard drive!), surf the net again, to check all is ok.

8 - In the drop down menu at the top (Accessories), select "terminal", and type:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

and answer yes to it request for disk space. This gets the 32bit libaries.

9 - Install folding@home SMP by typing the following:

mkdir -p ~/folding/FAH
cd ~/folding/FAH
wget http://www.stanford.edu/~kasson/fold..._SMP_Linux.tgz
tar xzf FAH_SMP_Linux.tgz

GET IT RUNNING WITH:

./fah5

There are further instructions for creating a batch file and flags etc here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-SMP.html

To get back to Windows press Ctrl + Alt

Re: Folding with Linux SMP under VMware

I've gotten 10+ Ubuntu updates after i installed and got updates upon installing. Do i need to have a software firewall and or antivirus for Ubuntu? I'm behind a router but no antivirus s/w.

AFAIK there are no viruses for linux, and my Suse install has a built in firewall, so perhaps ubuntu does too?
