Re: Folding@Home

@rolling, sorry I don't have VMware anymore so can't help much.

adict2jane: I tried once copying the entire folder (including the "work") to the new PC and it works. In the new PC it started the process from the last % and submitted the WU at the end. But I don't know how to stop the fold after submitting WU.

Hi again Dee I tried that. I saved it to Ubuntu desktop (Not rollong56 desktop) named it FAH [FAH(~/Desktop) - gedit]. The F@H file's are in /home/rolling56/FAH./fah5 on Ubuntu.

Anyway i tried what you posted and no go. Should i name it something different? I tried to move it to the FAH folder and double click it and moved it to rolling56 desktop and still no go.

Should i just format and start all over and just stop at #5 on the guide?

LOL no, I'm using you as a guinea pig ...yep, geek to the extreme

That's a good idea. Maybe these posts could be split off to a Linux Folding thread so it's easy to find for anyone else needing help.

(Maybe jwill would consider splitting it? )

I guess people shouldn't use that guide. Someone needs to make a better not so advanced guide?

No i'm not a geeker. No pocket protectors for me It runs a little jerky with the mouse and stuff but i guess it's because it's a virtual os?
Hopefully i can get this straightened out with F@H on Ubuntu.

Thanks to Dee and debro. They are the ones that know this stuff. Zevia helped too.
I had a hard time at first knowing where to stupid terminal is Once i found it it was a piece of cake till it didn't work I just needed some way to turn it on and Dee fixed that. Terminal=dos prompt i guess in windoze. That's what it seems like to me.

Now to see how it runs in Linux. I'm at 1% already I'm going to do a restart and see if it saved that work.

Edit:
Yep started at 1% when i restarted it

Re: Folding@Home

Update:
F@H is still running fine. I notice CPU usage bounces between 90% and 100% on both cores which is fine. Stops and starts fine so no problems yet.

Thanks again to everyone that helped

However Dee-27 told me that she does not experience slow down, perhaps because she is using 64bit OS, which has better memory management.
I notice my C2D machine is slower using VM and Ubuntu so maybe i need to throw in 2 more gigs of RAM? Or is it CPU usage? It's not so slow to make me get rid of VM and Ubuntu.

Re: Folding with Linux SMP under VMware

Arachne just remember to use CTRL + ALT to get out of Ubuntu for your mouse. I had to learn all of it with not much help but it tells you this at the bottom of the screen so look around. I guess once you use it you forget to tell people the little things. And if you need help i'll try to help you. Also the guide tells you where the "Terminal" is.

Well you might want to load it on a partition than using VMware. VMware is like using a Remote Desktop. I might do that some day.

Yeah, that's how I had it before. And a tiny partition for a swap file IIRC
