Re: Folding@Home

Just joined the team. I am a little concerned about the length of the work units.

I have had my comp (P3 900Mhz) running for a couple hours and I have only completed 2/50000 frames. It says it sould complete in Oct. 2009! Is this normal?

Re: Folding@Home

welcome to the team! first new member in nearly a month

it is normal for WUs to start off slow like that, it should jump to 500/50000 fairly soon, and it should take 1.5-2 weeks to finish since it is such a big one

I think your name will show up as registered when you complete your first WU and it shows up on the Team Stats.

At least IIRC, that's how it was with me.

Welcome to the team, BTW

Re: Folding@Home

another new member, welcome to the team JBT_DK

unfortunately it looks like you've had all EUEs so far , if your machine is overclocked you will need to back it down a smidge FAH is very sensitive to overclocking and even the slightest instability...I've found that even if a system is prime stable it doesn't automatically mean it is folding stable.

if you post some system specs we could help you more

Re: Folding@Home

Ok, well, I'm just getting a few spare moments, (very few actualy, as usual), but just wanted to let y'all know that I'm going to start two machines running for team CD-freaks. I haven't read hardly any of this thread, so I'll just ask right now, if there's any way anyone can let me know some post numbers that may help to bring me up to speed quickly. I've got alot on my plate in the next several weeks as my dearest is about to have a fairly major surgery and I am about to become Mr. Mom very full time for awhile.

I haven't even started looking at what I need to do but I'm about to do that now. I'll let y'all know how I make out.

Re: Folding@Home

Whelp, I'll just tried to update my original post, and I ran out of time. lol. Seems simple enough. Have it running on two machines, and I THINK I let it use more of the CPU than it usualy does. (I set the "Core Priority," setting to "Slightly Higher," though I'm not entirely sure that that will actualy make it run any faster.) If anyone can point me right to an explanation that will allow the program to run any faster, I'd happily do it!

I have a name for each machine. The AMD K-6/2 is Joe_Dirt, and the P4 Celeron 2.4 Ghz is "Johnny_Thunder."

Welcome to the team, Joe - I would run both under the same name though, so your WUs and points get added to the one account

Re: Folding@Home

welcome to the team JD! looks like you have it up and running, but if you have any trouble you can either ask in this thread or check the FAH faq here:

http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html

as Arachne mentioned, you can use the same name on both comps, which will add all your points together under that name, or you can keep the different names, which will keep track of your points submitted by each comp separately. either way it is the same benefit for science, so it is up to personal preference

as for core priority, it shouldn't really matter either way since most windows programs run at normal priority, but if you have any programs that run at below normal or low priority (possibly virus scanners or other bground tasks), FAH might steal CPU cycles from them at "slightly higher" priority

Re: Folding@Home

welcome to the team ItsRick

@Joe: a 450 is near the lower end of cpus that can meet the WU deadlines (stanford says a 300Mhz is the lowest CPU that can meet deadlines) so you will probably need to leave this system on 24-7. if you cant do that (or if you can but it is not meating deadlines), then there is an option in the config menu to only use deadlineless WUs

there are a few things you can check to make sure it is folding at full output, first check that fahcore_xx.exe is using 99% cpu in the task manger, also, with the graphical client the view window sucks a lot of cpu power when it is open, so keep it closed as much as possible (Its ok to check it, just remember to close it afterward )

Re: Folding@Home

first off, welcome to the newest member Milky_Way

secondly, an update on my beast: I got the fx-60 installed and crunching 2 instances of FAH, core 0 is p1498@27% (805 pts. ) and core 1 is p2124@2% (I think everyone is familiar with these ) as soon as 1498 finishes I'll fire up SMP (gotta break her in, right? ). also got a vid card ordered for the 3700, should be here in a day or two

out of curiosity, is anyone here running SMP? I suxor @ linux, but hopefully I'll be able to figure it out

and lastly (hopefully it won't be our last though ), another milestione has been broken!
200k total team points

Re: Folding@Home

welcome to the team Savannah!!! you are the 20th member, the team has finally broken past the teens

@Debro: it sounds like you don't have the 32-bit runtime environment installed, which you need because only the cores are 64-bit, the console itself is still 32-bit

to install it go to YaST>Software>System Update, then select Patterns from the drop-down filter box and check the box for 32-bit runtime environment in the Base Technologies section then click accept to install

if you already have the 32-bit RE, try running with and without the -advmethods flag, make sure it is configured to send/recieve WUs>5mb, and make sure it is reporting the correct amount of memory. if none of that works then i dunno

BTW, me suxors @ linux, but suse is the easiest one I've used and its really starting to grow on me
