You have to turn it on in bios though.
While i agree how neatly speedstep compliments the C2D's COOL (NOT hearing my large diameter slow rotation fans ) efficiency it was my understanding and experience that its role is to throttle back cpu clock speed to 1.6 GHZ when the PC is idle or if activity falls under a certain threshold rather than being initiated by the cpu's actual temp?

it actually does both, it will throttle back when the temp hits 81c... there's an old toms hardware video floating around somewhere that shows them removing the HSF from an A-xp, a P3, and a P4 while they're running and the P4 was the only one that survived because it had speedstep

back on topic...congrats to jhtalisman on 500k

Aye, that be the case.

It was initially just implemented in mobile chips .... who buys a bleeding edge 1Ghz chip for their high end desktop & wants it to throttle back, right? But then, the realised that less people would claim for their chips "lifetime warranty" if they had some sort of self protection built in

AMD is yet to catch on ... Athlons just melt & eventually burst into flame.

Shot Down .... In a blaze of glory!

Ty. Sorry to be so late with the thanks, I've been avoiding the Internets for a bit - real life has been a bit busy both at work and at home
