Upgrading is once again on my mind. Could say just for F@H but for Crysis and UT3. Mmmmmmmm

Going to probably go for a Penryn Quad Core. Either that or wait for the Nehalem chip. Double Mmmmmmmmm.

Then a nice new Mobo, and super fast Ram. Triple Mmmmmmmm.

I've seen a couple of gaming benchmarks and it performs just slightly better than an equally clocked kentsfield, but because of the smaller 45nm process they get consistently better OCs, 4ghz+ is supposedly a piece of cake on air

the extra cache will probably speed FAH up quite a bit too

Re: Folding@Home

Well, I'm only folding on one machine now

The PSU on my Pentium D just blew (at least I'm assuming it was the PSU, it went out with an awful bang, scared the crap out of me, tripped all the power), so I'll need to get another and find out what it took out with it

I've got a 2 year RTB warranty on the machine (11 months remaining), so I'll call the guy in the PC shop (who, luckily I'm friendly with) on Monday.

Re: Folding@Home

Ouch Arachne, that's gotta hurt! What PSU was in there? Good quality one or our favorite no-brand type?

I've still only got one PC folding myself, but I also run a client whenever I'm on a computer in school which does work within the deadlines as I have plenty of time at a computer screen through my Computing A Level. I also bring the folding client home on a pendrive if it needs a bit of extra running time to finish.

When I start running my server box I'll throw the client on there, and I'll probably put it back on my dad's PC too...more processing power is always good!

Re: Folding@Home

It was an FSP one, so reasonably good quality, although not on a par with the likes of Seasonic et al.

I've decided to heck with the warranty, I'll try and pick up another decent PSU on Monday if I can. I miss my Pentium D ....though I hope the PSU hasn't taken anything with it! Personally I always thought 350W was a little on the low side, and leaving it on every other night going full-tilt folding probably didn't help.

Hehe running the client at school? Naughty boy

Re: Folding@Home

I'm using an Enermax Liberty Modular PSU at the moment (in my sig) and for the 3 weeks or so that I've had it it's been good...but that says nothing except that it wasn't DOA. I guess folding does stress the components, but 350w probably was pushing the boundaries of what is a good idea.

On the whole school thing I don't see it as being wrong at all. Essentially I'm logged on to a PC to run some software of whatever kind. This extra piece of software doesn't interfere with anything and I'm not installing it as a service so it's not like I'm doing anything terribly wrong.

Yeah, I agree, especially with the power the Pentium D sucks up - I'll probably go for another FSP one (I can get one in Maplin's thank God. After getting 2 DOA Antecs online, I'd rather have something I can return in person!), but this time a bit beefier

I was only teasing you about being naughty, hence the smiley

Re: Folding@Home

Hehe, I got mine from...ebuyer I think, not DOA but I guess it's purely random.

I'd love to have the client running as a service on that many machines...potentially 200+ machines folding for me every day for 5-7 hours. That would be absolute bliss...shame they disabled installation as a service.

Woot! My shed PC just turned in its first work unit, just waiting for my dad's to do the same now. Seems that even adding quite low powered PCs to the job makes a difference.

Congrats! Unless you are running the SMP client with dual or quad core cpus, it's really the number of rigs you have running that matters.

The only computers I have on the project were pulled from the trash, but I have have 10 running which makes all the difference.

I'd absolutely hate to see your electic bill.

I'll be getting geared up again sometime this weekend or next week with a new quad core rig. You're 100k back, that's too close.

Re: Folding@Home

Well I'll be getting a nice lappy for university so I'll be able to fold fairly competitively whenever it's plugged in (obviously I wouldn't want to drain the battery).

For now I'm just installing it wherever and whenever I can (with permission of course, but people seem easy to convince when they hear of it and even surprised that such a potentially good thing doesn't have a wider audience).

All my rigs are at work so I don't have to worry about the electricity bill. I did just do a calculation, just short of 1KW of power draw for my F@H and WCG computers here 24/7. OUCH!

Enjoy that quad, yes, I will have no chance of catching you with that.

I love life...Yeah, I'm sad, but at the same time, I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like...It makes me feel alive, you know. It makes me feel human. The only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt something really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good. So I guess what I'm feeling is like a beautiful sadness.

Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.

Don't be blinded by the front a person puts up to keep you from finding out who they really are.

If you want peace of mind, stop fighting with your thoughts.

The most important things are the hardest to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them-words shrink things that seemed limitless when in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for the want of an understanding ear. - Stephen King, intro to "The Body."
