Re: Folding@Home

Every PC I own has an AMD chip in it (even my work PC & Work laptop)... I guess my upgrades generally coincide with those times that AMD is the better choice

There was a time when AMD was the underdog ... back when the intel MMX chips were first released .. and then AMD released their Athlon based line and mopped the floor with Intel for less power & significantly lower MHZ (still lower MHZ) .. and that period lasted about 10 years - through the P2, P3, P4, P4HT, and P4 Dual Core... and now they're the underdog again vs intels lucky fluke, the Core Duo/Core 2 Duo.

Don't worry .. AMD will be back on top shortly.

Re: Folding@Home

intel was on top for a while when they released the northwood P4 (6 months IIRC)

with the competition between intel and AMD the consumer wins big time, just think of where we would be if intel was still a monopoly I'm waiting for AMD to release the Stars procs before I make a move, if they are any good I'll get one, and if not, they will probably still force price drops on core 2

6months in 10 years can be disregarded as an anomaly

Re: Folding@Home

I retired one of my Core2Duo PC for folding and will get it up sometime next week. For now I'm only folding using the other Core2Duo but it seems I'm still alone up there.

Unless someone gets a core 2 quad or a PS3, I think you should be alone up there for some time.

Only using 1 PC and it's not on 24/7 and even when it is on, F@H isn't always running @100%. I'm also just using the standard Windows client.

[EDIT] The Core 2 Duo is being used though. With the warm weather and the PC's in a small room. It was to hot to run both PC's. So this PC is also acting as a network server too.

4 Core is my next upgrade, or probably 8 core by the time I get around to it.

I was going to stick the F@H client on my works demo PS3 to get some extra crunching going but it's not conencted to the net.

Re: Folding@Home

Yeah, my poor main beast doesn't get much of a workout either .. it must be feeling neglected It might be on for 2 hrs/ day.

I might have to switch it back to two single standard fah clients, since I doubt that a x2 3800 on for 2 hrs can meet thetight SMP deadlines.

Re: Folding@Home

Project 2609

Using E6300 2M Cache 450x7= 3.15Ghz ~18:30 mins per frame
Code:
[10:12:17] Completed 195000 out of 500000 steps (39 percent)
[10:27:17] Timered checkpoint triggered
[10:30:51] Writing local files
[10:30:51] Completed 200000 out of 500000 steps (40 percent)
same project, paused to change CPU...

E6600 4M Cache 400x9= 3.6Ghz ~ 11:30 mins per frame
Code:
[20:10:49] Completed 300000 out of 500000 steps (60 percent)
[20:22:22] Writing local files
[20:22:22] Completed 305000 out of 500000 steps (61 percent)
So basically a 14% increase of CPU speed and additional 2MB cache can increase folding speed about 40%... nice!

Anyone else having trouble getting a WU? My results went through fine last night, but still this afternoon it's having trouble fetching work.

Edit: Hehe, nm - found the problem, possibly

In fact, there's several threads there about it.

Re: Folding@Home

Oh doh. sorry.

But I did get a WU this morning or around 11:45AM on the 171.64.65.64 server time. Maybe some of their servers are down? I had that problem a while back but cleaning up the FAH folder usualy fix the problem, maybe restarting FAH will get you a new server address that works? (cleaned "work" directory etc and leave client.cfg and FAH-console.exe).

Btw, I failed to meet the deadline in my lowly Pentium D 2.66Ghz with this SMP project 2610. I didn't know that the console was closed so the PC didn't fold for a day.
