The dutch have a reputation in Australia, and sleeping with the fishes goes a long way furthering that reputation

Re: Folding@Home

Hahaha...I was running F@H and doing a virus scan at the same time, and my BIOS's SmartFan function kicked in (which it does at a certain temp)...I was sitting there all quiet, watching TV, then all over a sudden...rrrRRRRRRRRRRR!

I nearly shot out of my chair, though I guessed what it was...my PCs usually so quiet LOL

Re: Folding@Home

ouch !!! i don't have a smart fan monitor!!! but i have this BIOS temp-monitor though, dunno if they're the same thing with a different name...
anyway.. after i bought a new Power supply everything went cool it was nothing unusual to hear my CPU fan crying loud from the next room with CPU temp trying to stick to 69°C (i used to set the Shutdown-temp to 70°C)... but now in the hottist climate, nothing is going over 60°... i hope

my problem now is the HD overheating while Virus-scanning or defragmenting ... that's what i couldn't find a solution for yet

Squished in the corner blocking the airflow like a cheap dell machine?

Installing a case fan near the HDD should keep it cool enough. Otherwise buying a proper HDD cooler might be the solution. They're about $10us for a cheap one

well, looking at the PC case it's the worst design i've ever seen... and i'm not the one to blame, i bought this PC from the NetCafé i used to work for ... so YES, ventilation sucks ... but it's hardware related too, like, right now my Maxtor 120GB SATA boy is 44° while my other WD 250GB SATA boy is 33°!!! i tried to turn the Automatic Acoustic Management level to "Minimum" for the Maxtor, but it helped in nothing... and it's not a good time for another purchase no matter how cheap ... but i'm sure i'll get a HDD cooler fan before summer
thaaanx

Re: Folding@Home

Change the case for a real case, rather than the shoebox which is fine if you're running a P3 600Mhz with 1 HDD, and is idling while you await the next customer

well, eventually i will ... but looking at the changes i made to the PC since purchasing... nothing is still the same inside ...
  • Powersupply replaced: 260WATT sucker replaced by a 500WATT Switching
  • VGA card replaced: GeForce 5700LE 128MB replaced bt MSI RX-9550 256MB
  • RAM: 512MB added
  • HDD: WDC 250GB purchased
  • DVD-RWs: NEC NR-9400A replaced by ND-3550A & DW-1640
  • a Genius Tablet purchased..
and as u can see, that's too much for a someone who doesn't currently have a job
but all i still need is a new MB and CPU and then i can head for the Case
you can say, i just bought a used skeleton to build upon

Nah, I was just kidding, I explained it to him, he was just a little concerned that he might be vulnerable to a trojan or something.

Has anyone heard of distributed computing getting exploited/attacked?

Nope ....
The upload/download is initiated completely by the client, and the data (Work Unit) sent/received is not executable anyway. Once the data has been sent/received the connection is completely closed.
FAH is not running any sort of communications server on your machine, until you finish a work unit/request a new one. Once it's sent/received all comms are shut down again.

Re: Folding@Home

Jwill, it looks like you have submitted two SMPs 1760 pointers within 48 hours, congrats!

The race for 6th place is very tight between adict2jane, JBT_DK and istrick but jhtalisman is closely behind with SMP engine and submitted a 1760 pointers not too long ago.

Re: Folding@Home

well, how can i know if i have an SMP engine?! (a stupid question, i know, but i want to hear the answer from u pals... i don't really want to go through all the google results ...) i mean, an SMP (symmetric Multi-processor??!) is usually a Multi-core CPU, right?

Re: Folding@Home

SMP= Symmetric MultiProcessing
Requires two or more CPU's, or two or more CPU CORES otherwise it can't be symmetric Multi-Processing

Any Dual core CPU can do SMP. However, the Linux client requires the 64b processors (sorry for the Core Duo's owners).
The windows SMP client can use 32 or 64b cpu dual core cpu's.

Re: Folding@Home

With the Pentium 4's (and Xeons) HT doesn't count for SMP ... it's still just one CPU Core, but has two execution pipelines, to maximise utilisation of the single core - if one pipeline has to wait for data, the other can execute and vice versa ...

There's lots of controversy about HT for FAH ... Two clients crunch more WU's over a longer time period, but one client will return WU results faster, so they can move to the next generation of WU's quicker, etc, which may or may not benefit the project.

The way I see it, there's likely a little celeron 300 sitting out there somewhere in the WWW holding up the project, and 1/2 the runtime of a Pentium HT 3Ghz is a hell of alot faster anyway.

Better use two standard clients on a P4/Xeon HT
Never use a SMP client on a P4/Xeon HT

i might be getting an AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core, maybe a 3500+... but that's not before 4 months from now ... but for my current HT SUCKER... i can do nothing but feel sorry i can't help the FAH better

Why sorry? Core2Duo is a 64bit processor, or did I missed someting?

Thats a Core 2 Duo processor .. not a Core 1 Duo processor.

Core2Duos are 64b/32b (Merom/Conroe and Quads Kentsfield/Penryn/Woodcrest) and come in Dual or Quad core.

Core (1) are 32b only (Yonah) and come in dual core (duo) or single core (solo).

Confusing enough for you?

If it helps, many computer shops & adverts refer to them all as Core Duo's, or Core2's. And most sales assistants can't tell you the difference between a Core 2 Duo, or Core Duo, or for that matter refer to Core Solo's (yonah) as Core 2 Solos.

I believe Core 2's don't come in a solo model. The Dual core is the budget model for the Core 2's
