check out the new e8x00s (dual) or q9x00s (quad)... really the only way to go right now if you want extreme performance and overclocking, they'll hit 4ghz on air pretty easily as long as the motherboard can handle high FSBs

Individually overclockable cores. Cheaper than a intel Q6600 with approximately the same price/performance ratio.

The AMD dual cores crank like a baby hauling a ton of .. well .. anything ... up a steep hill.

unfortunately, i doubt that i can mess with the cpu in any way, the PC is a property of the company i'm working for, and i guess they won't allow me to get adminisrator privileges... i'll try to convince them though... that means no overclocking as well ...

i'm gonna check the local prices over here, might be getting an e8x00 ... let's just hope that the IT team would understand that i might really know about computer parts more than they think they do... they got a a sweeet sweet q6600 and killed it with an intel G9something VGA... adobe software keeps on crashing...

Does the command line client (non-smp) require admin priviledges?
It's been a long time since I've managed to accidentally force myself into a limited user account, but you should be able to stick a few proggy folders on your desktop and then run them from there

Create shortcuts to the command line programs & drag & drop them into your USER's startup folder

That should be accessible to you at any time ... I believe.
It's not as good as an smp client, but .. well .. points are points

You will of course, end up with 4x MSDOS windows popping up ... but they'll be grouped, once you are busy anyway

so CLI clients are not SMP?! ... unlucky me ...
i don't mind the 4 CLIs floating around ... as well as there're some progs of the likes of "minimize to systray" over here ... and they don't need Admin privileges iirc...

the IT/devices suppliers here in Dubai seem to be pretty awkward... i was trying to know what're the available stuff in the market... they helped me in nothing!!! now i have to send all the possible specs i need to them to see if anything matches... which DOES suck

My friends PS3 is a folding crusher, its working its way to the top of team CDfreaks ranks, lol. I've calculated that it costs about 33US/Mo to run it LOL, he's renting so its all good.

lol thats awesome, if I didn't have to pay for elec. I know I'd have more rigs folding, I've had a quite a few opportunities to get free/dirt cheap pII/pIII class rigs but just can't justify the cost to run them

Yep the only reason I have numerous computers running is because they are at my work. Otherwise it would be another $40-$60 dollars a month on the electricity bill. I have no problem running P3s as the computers only consume 50 watts under load, which is about the same as a newer computer while idling.

Anyone know how to view FAH progress on a Linux ( ubuntu ) desktop?
I had a mobo burn out on me and decided to install ubuntu on this machine when i got it back up.It took awhile before i could load the FAH and get it running but I got it done.

Brought up system monitor and i can see it is using 100% CPU and just went into FAHLog.txt and noticed it finished a 500,000 in 1 hour.

would like to see without going into log file each time.If anyone can point me in the right direction or give me detail instructions i would be very gratefull.I have never worked on a linux system before.

its been a while since I've folded w/linux, but IIRC if you start the client from a command prompt it will start running in that command prompt instead of in the background like when you double click the client

Thanks for the reply, I kept looking for a command prompt and found nothing that i could use by that name.

I found out that ubuntu uses a program called launcher: Type : Application in Terminal, that got me the Dos/Terminal window to view what it was doing.

From what I am seeing it looks like FAH runs faster on Linux.Just did another 500,000 steps in 58 Minutes.

sorry terminal was what I meant but had a brain fart and couldn't think of what it was called in linux

After watching this I noticed it does not work right.Starts okay but after it writes a couple of lines it stops writing, program still working but i have to get out of it and go back in to see what is going on.

Anyone using the new Intel 45nm CPU's for folding?
With the dual core 6MB cache and the quad 12MB cache, how fast do they fold compared to a 65nm dual/quad?

Should be getting a laptop with a dual core this summer so I'll have to give it a go (fairly sure the CPU I'm getting has a 6MB cache). It's great being able to justify this purchase since I'm going to study Computer Science next year !

Isn't that the platform where the functions of the North Bridge chip is integrated into the CPU package?
That probably means an end to clocking the FSB.

If what I've seen is true, it's going to be more difficult to overclock them.

I think the feeling was, if you take the North Bridge functions and put them on the CPU package. It then becomes very easy for Intel to lock the FSB, just as it does with the multiplier.

Or perhaps just an end to Intel (for enthusiasts)
