Hey all,

Sorry I have been not keeping up with the team. I have a big admissions test on Aug. 4th so everything is taking a backseat until then. We can now make challenges to other teams for work done in a given period of time etc. So if you guys find a team that is equally matched, we can try and take them on!

Discovering Dengue Drugs – Together

Project Status and Findings:

Mission
The mission of Discovering Dengue Drugs – Together is to identify promising drug leads to combat the related dengue, hepatitis C, West Nile, and Yellow fever viruses. The extensive computing power of World Community Grid will be used to complete the structure-based drug discovery calculations required to identify these leads.

Significance
This project will discover promising drug leads that stop the replication of viruses within the Flaviviridae family. Members of this family, including dengue, hepatitis C, West Nile, and Yellow fever viruses, pose significant health threats throughout the developed and developing world. More than 40% of the world's population is at risk for infection by dengue virus. Annually, 1.5 million people are treated for dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever. Hepatitis C virus has infected ~2% of the world's population. Yellow fever and West Nile viruses have also had significant global impact. Unfortunately, there are no drugs that effectively treat these diseases. Consequently, the supportive care necessary to treat these infections and minimize mortality severely strains already burdened health facilities throughout the world. The discovery of both broad–spectrum and specific antiviral drugs is expected to significantly improve global health.

Approach
One promising approach to combat these viruses and prevent them from causing disease is to develop drugs that inhibit the viral NS3 protease. The NS3 protease is an enzyme critical for virus replication, and its amino acid sequence and atomic structure are very similar among the different disease–causing flaviviruses. Since the atomic structure of the NS3 protease is known, we can utilize advanced structure–based computational drug discovery methods to identify small molecule protease inhibitors.

Dr. Stan Watowich and his research team at The University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston, Texas, USA) have made significant progress in this direction, having discovered compounds that inhibit dengue and West Nile virus proteases and prevent virus replication in cell culture. However, additional drug candidates need to be discovered to improve the likelihood of converting drug leads into approved drugs for treating flavivirus infections.

It has been over a month since the last post so an update is due.

1. I signed us up for another challenge. For total run time, points generated, and results returned. There are a lot of teams taking part so it could be interesting.

2. There is a new project, AfricanClimate@Home. You guys can read more about it here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.or...viewAchMain.do

3. We are now ranked #380 in total points generated and have over 14 years of CPU time donated.

4. I successfully got someone to join our team! sorta... he didn't want to sign up so he just used my username.

hello there a2j !!!
well, currently i've been giving a better concentration over the WCG... i'm almost getting 2 new units each day ... priority have been a bit raised as it's getting cooler now and i don't have to keep watching for the CPU overheating ...

i think i have to go back to my user page and check if i unchecked any projects... maybe it's time to add some new ones too ...

annd... some better news
on the end of October i'll be leaving home and heading to the United Arab Emirates to work, maybe in Dubai, so there i'll be having a better build at home, in addition to the better builds at work .. and i'm gonna work in a GFX Design agency so, u can imagine what kind of PCs you expect to see there ....

Launch of the Help Conquer Cancer Project

World Community Grid is pleased to launch the Help Conquer Cancer project by the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network of Toronto, Canada. The mission of Help Conquer Cancer is to improve the results of protein X-ray crystallography, which helps researchers not only annotate unknown parts of the human proteome, but importantly improves their understanding of cancer initiation, progression and treatment. Project Participation
Help Conquer Cancer is the ninth research project to be launched on World Community Grid and one of five projects currently active. The other four active research projects are: AfricanClimate@Home, (launched August, 2007), Discover Dengue Drugs – Together (launched August, 2007), Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 (launched July, 2006) and FightAIDS@Home, (launched November, 2005). Because there are five research projects running on World Community Grid, your grid agent could receive work units from any of the projects. Please note, that members were not automatically opted in to the AfricanClimate@Home project due to the computationally intensive code. If you are already a member of World Community Grid, running the BOINC version of our software, there's nothing that you have to do to prepare for the Help Cure Cancer project. The next time your grid agent communicates with the servers, it will send you a work unit from one of the projects at random for which your machine meets the minimum requirements and according to your project participation election preference. To know which project you are running, please double-click on World Community Grid icon in the system tray, and you will see the title of the project in the display. To contribute to the Help Conquer Cancer project, you will need to be using the BOINC software rather than the United Devices software. If you are running the United Devices version of our software, you should use this occasion to migrate to the BOINC software so that you may participate in all current and future research projects. You may migrate to BOINC by following the instructions here. Migrating is easy and takes less than 5 minutes. The install process even uninstalls the UD software for you automatically.

I tried putting boinc back on my P4, but it seems the new WUs use way more ram than they used to so it was thrashing the pagefile and bringing everything to a crawl

Hmm that's weird, I have lots of machines with only 256mb of RAM and they do just fine. However, I only use those rigs for crunching.
