At $10 per cartridge there isn't a huge discount from the OEM cartridges. IMO, for CLI-8 cartridges, the best bang-for-the-buck is to refill and live without the ink level monitoring feature. Doing this costs the user about $1 per cartridge. Saving $50-$100 per set of ink cartridges is worth the hassles of refilling, IMO.

Basically, you're paying $4-5 per tank for the chip. Doesn't seem worth it to me either, when you can un-chipped compatible tanks for so much less. Hopefully the price on these will drop.

You can get the same Remanufactured or Compatible Cartridges from http://www.genxinks.com. A more specific link is here http://genxinks.com/advanced_search_...6849&x=34&y=12

Its about $1.50 cheaper than what was posted above. And yes its true, you can refill it and deal with the no ink status. But we all know there are those that don't like the mess. (raising hand) I'm one of them.

I thought that a chip reseter had been made for the canon chipped carts.
So you don't have to do without the ink levels.

There are a few chip resetters (the Red Setter is one) out now that work well but I have heard that Canon is tweaking the chips on newer cartridges to mess with them. I'm not sure how hey can do it and still be compatible with older printers though.

Re: Remanufactured Canon CLI-8 Cartridges

Demand to know what label is on the reman cart from the seller.
TrueStar is one brand of reman cart that has gotten good feedback in CLI-8 and PGI-5.
The chips are reset to show full. Insist on that !!
Some testing has shown that genuine Canon ink will out-perform TrueStar, but no reports that it is hard on the printhead.
You must be sure that your generic ink has a good rep and will not clog/damage your printhead !
I wouldn't buy it unless it was at least 40% less than genuine ink (shipped).
If you refill yourself, it'd a ridiculous amount, like 90% less than genuine ink prices.

The REdSETTER is working on all (CLI-8 / PGI-5) chipped Canon carts.
(Search on "REdSETTER" in this forum for more info)
I have seen no reports that "Canon is tweaking the chips on newer cartridges"
although they can't be very happy about the success of the REdSETTER.
